ATTENTION! Irish-Americans
The Butte Miner, Butte, 1916-04-29, p.5
Summary
Display-ad / signed-call for a mass meeting at Hibernia Hall Butte on Sunday April 30 1916 at 2 p.m. to form a Butte branch of the Friends of Irish Freedom (FOIF). "Every man of Irish blood who believes that Ireland ought of right to be a free and independent republic and is willing to work to that end is urgently requested to attend." CRITICAL TIMING. The Easter Rising in Dublin began on 24 April 1916 and the GPO surrendered on 29 April 1916 — the SAME DAY this Butte call ran. The Butte FOIF branch was effectively a direct response to the Rising. The FOIF was a national American organisation founded in March 1916 (by John Devoy and Daniel F. Cohalan at the Irish Race Convention in New York). The Butte branch's formation places it among the earliest American responses to the Rising. SIGNATORIES (52 named — a comprehensive snapshot of Butte's Irish-American leadership in April 1916): J. J. Lynch (Judge); John J. O'Meara; Rev. M. J. Hannan; James J. McCarthy; John J. Crowley; M. J. English; **John C. Murphy** (recurring AOH figure — Division 1 recording secretary in Jan 1913); John H.
