Summary

Marble Catholic headstone with carved IHS monogram and floral scroll. Four Murphys commemorated. Inscription verbatim: > Erected By > JOHN & JEREMIAH MURPHY > IN MEMORY OF THEIR BELOVED FATHER > **CORNELIUS MURPHY** > WHO DIED 2nd FEB. 1879 > AGED 61 YEARS > LORD HAVE MERCY ON HIS SOUL > AND THEIR MOTHER > **MARY** > DIED 13TH FEB. 1907 > AGED 83 YEARS > R.I.P. > **CON MURPHY** > DIED 12TH APRIL 1944 > HIS WIFE **KATIE** > DIED 25TH OCT. 1912 PROVISIONAL identification: **Cornelius Murphy (b. ~1818 Co. Cork)** is plausibly a brother of **James Murphy (b. ~1816 Ballycrovane, JJM's paternal grandfather per GEDCOM)** — they differ by only 2 years and could be siblings in the same Beara Murphy family. If so, Cornelius is JJM's great-uncle, his sons John + Jeremiah Murphy are JJM's first cousins once removed, and the Con Murphy + Katie pair (d. 1944 / 1912) are next-generation Beara Murphy cousins. The Annals of Beara (Riobárd Ó Dwyer) ingest (deferred to a future session) should resolve this generational placement. Held at family_confidence 25 pending corroboration.

Also mentioned

  • John Murphy · son_who_erected_stone

Son of Cornelius + Mary; co-erector of the headstone. Plausibly JJM's first cousin once removed if the Cornelius-as-brother-of-James hypothesis holds.

  • Jeremiah Murphy · son_who_erected_stone

Same. The name Jeremiah recurs in the Lyne family (Myles Lyne's father was Jeremiah Lyne) — common Beara given name.

Open questions

  • Specific cemetery — not visible in the photograph. Most likely a Beara-peninsula Catholic cemetery (Kilcatherine, Eyeries, or Allihies) given the family connection. User may know which.
  • Relationship of THIS Cornelius Murphy to JJM's paternal grandfather James Murphy — needs Annals of Beara confirmation. Two Murphy patriarchs of the right generation could be brothers or could be unrelated.
