People — link detail

  • Patrick Murphy (my ancestor)(as printed: Patrick Murphy)
role: groom · family confidence: 100 certain

age: full age · status: Bachelor · occupation: Tradesman · residence: Eyeries

The user's paternal great-great-grandfather. Primary-source confirmation of his pre-emigration occupation (Tradesman, not farmer as the family is often described) and his residence in Eyeries village (not the rural townland of his father).

  • role: bride · family confidence: 100 certain

age: full age · status: Spinster · residence: Ardgroom

MAIDEN NAME PRIMARY-SOURCE CONFIRMED: Lyne. Daughter of Myles Lyne the Ardgroom farmer.

  • James /Murphy/(as printed: James Murphy)
role: father of groom · family confidence: 95 certain

    occupation: Farmer

JJM's paternal grandfather. Matches the existing GEDCOM-imported person_james_murphy_b1816_gedcom (b. ~1816 Ballycrovane Cork). The marriage cert names him as Farmer and "alive" implicitly (no "dead" annotation as appears on other entries on the same page).

  • role: father of bride · family confidence: 100 certain

occupation: Farmer · residence: Ardgroom (implied)

NEW: JJM's maternal grandfather, identified here for the first time as a primary-source-named individual. Pairs with the companion inbox file "Myles Lyne and Margaret Shea marriage 1865.pdf" which (when processed) should give his wife Margaret Shea (JJM's maternal grandmother).

Also mentioned

  • I. Larkin · officiating_priest

Parish Priest at Ardgroom; solemnized the Murphy-Lyne marriage. The initial reads I. (likely John Larkin per common period naming; the J/I distinction is unreliable in this script). Also visible solemnizing the other 3 marriages on the same page.

  • James M. Cawley · witness

Marriage witness; signature legible. The surname may read McCawley or McCarthy depending on the M. abbreviation interpretation.

  • Batt Lane · witness

Marriage witness; signature reads Batt with what appears to be R. or O. middle initial, surname Lane.

  • Charles Harrison · registrar

Civil registrar for the Castletown district; signed the entries and certified the copy on 25 April 1881.

  • Daniel Harrington · peripheral_same_page

Entry 6 (12 Feb 1881) — widower, farmer of Kilmacowen, m. Catherine Lynch of Ballycrovane.

  • Catherine Lynch · peripheral_same_page

Entry 6 — m. Daniel Harrington; father Patrick Lynch, farmer.

  • John Shea · peripheral_same_page

Entry 8 (16 Feb 1881) — bachelor, farmer of Pulleen, m. Johanna Sullivan of Pulleen at RC Chapel Eyeries; father Daniel Shea (farmer).

  • Johanna Sullivan · peripheral_same_page

Entry 8 — m. John Shea; father Cornelius Sullivan, farmer.

  • Michael Healy · peripheral_same_page

Entry 9 (19 Feb 1881) — bachelor, farmer of Cohig, m. Catherine Murphy at RC Chapel Eyeries; father Cornelius Healy, farmer.

  • Catherine Murphy · peripheral_same_page

Entry 9 — m. Michael Healy; full age, spinster, farmer's daughter of Cahiv; father Jeremiah Murphy (farmer, dead). DIFFERENT Catherine Murphy from JJM's godmother Catherine — DIFFERENT family (father Jeremiah, not James). Two-records rule.

The other three are catalogued in `metadata.yaml` as peripheral mentions: - **Entry 6 (12 Feb 1881)**: Daniel Harrington (widower, Kilmacowen) + Catherine Lynch (Ballycrovane). Father Patrick Lynch. - **Entry 8 (16 Feb 1881)**: John Shea (Pulleen) + Johanna Sullivan (Pulleen). Married at RC Chapel Eyeries. Father Daniel Shea + father Cornelius Sullivan. - **Entry 9 (19 Feb 1881)**: Michael Healy (Cohig) + **Catherine Murphy** (Cahiv). Married at RC Chapel Eyeries. Father Cornelius Healy + father **Jeremiah Murphy (dead)**. THIS Catherine Murphy is NOT JJM's godmother Catherine Murphy (different father — Jeremiah here, James Murphy for the godmother).

Open questions

  • The "Kilcatherine" Registrar's District is the same place as the 1918 Kilcatherine fishing-drowning clipping. Consider adding place_kilcatherine_district as a sub-place of place_castletownbere_cork.
  • James M. Cawley vs James McCarthy — handwriting ambiguous. The M. is unmistakable; the surname could read Cawley, McCawley, or McCarthy. Worth a second look.
  • The same-page entries (Harrington-Lynch, Shea-Sullivan, Healy-Murphy) are all early-Feb 1881 marriages in the same Castletown district — context for the social network Patrick and Ellen were marrying into. Catherine Murphy of Cahiv (entry 9) marrying Michael Healy a week later is a coincidence of name worth flagging — she is NOT JJM's godmother Catherine Murphy (different father, Jeremiah not James).
