Daniel L. Murphy, 86
The Montana Standard, Butte, 1980-10-05, p.2
Summary
Obituary for Daniel L. Murphy, 86 (NOT 70 as the user's filename has — filing typo), formerly of 919 W. Mercury, a retired clothing salesman for Hennessy's Department Store, died Saturday 4 October 1980 in New Castle, Wyoming. Mass of the Resurrection Tuesday at 10 in Butte's St. Patrick Church, with burial in Holy Cross Cemetery. Rosary Monday evening at 7:30 in Duggan Merrill Dolan Mortuary, 101 S. Idaho. A native of Butte, born Aug. 29, 1894. Clothing salesman at Hennessy's for many years until illness forced his retirement. Had been living the past few years with his son, Joseph, in New Castle. Survived by son Joseph, a sister Theresa Murphy of Seattle, and three grandchildren. CONSOLIDATION. This Daniel L. Murphy is the same person as "Daniel" the surviving son in the 1912 Patrick Murphy obit and "Dan Murphy of Butte" in the 1935 Ellen Murphy obit. The sister Theresa Murphy of Seattle is the same Miss Theresa Murphy who was named in both 1912 (Theresa of Butte, daughter) and 1935 (Miss Theresa Murphy of Seattle). The Hennessy's career bridges to all the OTHER Hennessy's-employed Murphys in the archive — Daniel was a clothing salesman at the same store where person_ james_j_murphy_centerville_aoh worked 1898-1920 as cash boy / superintendent / Centerville branch manager. WHETHER Daniel and JJM-AOH worked the same floor at Hennessy's at the same time is an open question worth pursuing. Daniel's brother James (of Los Angeles in 1935) is NOT listed as a surviving brother in 1980 — implying James predeceased Daniel sometime between 1935 and 1980. The three LA Times pages in the archive (1926, 1930, 1940) may include his death.

Open questions
- Daniel L Murphy worked at Hennessy's for "many years" as a clothing salesman. JJM-AOH was Hennessy's boys'-department head 1904-1915 and store superintendent 1915-1917. If Daniel started at Hennessy's in his late teens (c. 1912 — age 17-18) he could have worked under JJM. Worth a focused look.
- The user filename's "Aged 70" is a filing typo; the body confirms 86 (born 1894, died 1980).
- James Murphy (Daniel's brother, of LA per 1935) is NOT on the 1980 survivors list — implies he died 1935-1980. The Los Angeles Times pages of 1926, 1930, 1940 in this archive may carry his death.
