Anticipating the Summer Luggage Needs
The Butte Miner, Butte, 1915-05-02, p.6
Summary
Hennessy store ad fragment showing a photographic portrait of **James J. Murphy** with the caption "JAMES J. MURPHY / Boys' Shop — Luggage." Adjoining ad copy promotes the Trunk and Bag Section on the second floor: $4.00 Matting Suitcases for $2.95 (24 and 26-inch); $6.50 Fiber Suitcases for $4.95. ARCHIVE SIGNIFICANCE. The ONLY known photographic portrait of JJM in the archive so far. Three weeks before he is promoted from boys'-department manager to store superintendent (May 25 1915), the boys' shop manager is being featured in the Hennessy's broadsheet ads — a measure of how visible he is as a public face of the store. Light, posed studio head-and- shoulders, clean-shaven, dark suit and tie, head turned three- quarters left. Looks young — consistent with the disambiguation estimate of b. ~1880 (would be ~35 here). Side note: this ad is the kind of clipping that justifies a separate person_james_murphy_son_of_pat_and_ellen `portrait` field in people.yaml for the timeline UI — open question for the back- pass.
