Summary

TWO related Murphy households appear on this enumeration sheet: **Household 1 (lines 72-77) — Ellen Murphy as de-facto Head** (Patrick absent — consistent with his 1908 commitment to Warm Springs state asylum): 72 — Ellen Murphy, Head, F W, 46, M1 (married once), 27 yrs married, **9 children born, 3 living**, Ireland-born, immigrated 1872 [census error — should be 1892 per 1900 census], English, **Landlady, Apartments**, Owner. 73 — Daniel Murphy, Son, M W, 14, Single, Montana-born, None. 74 — Theresa Murphy, Daughter, F W, 11, Single, Montana-born, None. 75 — **Margaret Murphy**, Sister, F W, 40, Single, Ireland-born, immigrated [1872?], Waitress, Restaurant. (= JJM's paternal aunt; matches GEDCOM Margaret Murphy b. 10 May 1873.) 76 — **Christopher Murphy**, Cousin, M W, 26, Single, Ireland-born, immigrated 1904, Naturalized, Miner, Copper mine. (= NEW: Christopher Murphy, JJM's paternal cousin — possibly son of Michael Murphy of Ardgroom per the 1901 Ireland census household, plausibly Patrick's nephew.) 77 — **Sullivan, Nora**, Niece, F W, 22, Single, Ireland-born, immigrated 1906, Seamstress, Dressmaker. (= same Nora Sullivan who would marry John Hanley per the inbox file "Norah_Sullivan_and_John_Hanley_marriage.pdf".) CRITICAL: Ellen listed as **Head** of household in 1910 despite being M1 (married once, still married). Patrick is ABSENT — consistent with his 1908 commitment to the Montana State Hospital at Warm Springs (per the 1908 clippings already in the archive). He was at the asylum during the 1910 enumeration. Ellen's "9 children born, 3 living" statistic is brutal — between the 1900 census (4 born, 3 living) and 1910 (9 born, 3 living), she lost 5 more infants in a decade. None survived to be enumerated. **Household 2 (lines 89-91) — JJM's newlywed household**: 89 — James Murphy, Head, M W, 25, M1, **2 yrs married**, Ireland-born, immigrated 1872 [census error — should be 1892], Salesman, Clothing store. 90 — Agnes Murphy, Wife, F W, 24, M1, 2 yrs married, **1 child born, 1 living**, Montana-born, **father Ireland, mother Michigan**. (Mother-Michigan confirms Mary Chatham Kelly was Michigan-born per the 2026-05-27 Kelly-Chatham branch reconstruction.) 91 — **Agnes Murphy, Daughter**, F W, 2, Single, Montana-born. (= the future **Agnes Terese Murphy** who married John Paul Ward Llewellyn in 1940 LA. b. c. 1907-1908.) CONFIRMS the 2026-05-27 Llewellyn-Murphy-LA reconstruction: Agnes Terese is JJM + Agnes Kelly's eldest daughter, b. c. 1908 Montana (during her parents' first year of marriage).

People — link detail

  • role: head of household · family confidence: 100 certain

    age: 46 · sex: F · birthplace: Ireland · status: M1 (27 yrs) · occupation: Landlady, Apartments

Same Ellen as 1900 census. Now operating an apartment building ("Landlady, Apartments, Owner") — implies the Murphy household had become a small Butte landlord. The "9 children, 3 living" statistic shows the toll of period infant mortality on the family.

  • Daniel L. Murphy (Butte, b. 1894)(as printed: Daniel Murphy)
role: son in household · family confidence: 100 certain

    age: 14

Age 14 in April 1910 → b. ~1895-96. Matches 1900 census Daniel b. Aug 1894 (would be 15.5 by April 1910; minor drift). Daniel later worked at Boucher's in Butte (per 1938 LA James obit).

  • Theresa Murphy (Seattle)(as printed: Theresa Murphy)
role: daughter in household · family confidence: 100 certain

    age: 11

  • Margaret /Murphy/(as printed: Margaret Murphy)
role: sister in household · family confidence: 95 certain

age: 40 · birthplace: Ireland · occupation: Waitress, Restaurant

"Sister" of Ellen on the census = sister of Patrick (the household-head reference often defaults to the actual blood relation regardless of which spouse is listed as head). Matches GEDCOM person_margaret_murphy_b1873_gedcom (Patrick's sister b. 10 May 1873 Co. Cork). She emigrated and was a Butte waitress at 40, still single, living with her widowed-de-facto sister-in-law Ellen.

  • role: cousin in household · family confidence: 75 strong

age: 26 · birthplace: Ireland · occupation: Miner, Copper mine · years in US: 6 (immigrated 1904, naturalized)

NEW PERSON. Listed as cousin of household head; per Murphy-side lineage almost certainly a paternal cousin of JJM (son of one of Patrick's siblings). Most plausibly a son of Michael Murphy of Ardgroom (per the 1901 Ireland census, Michael had at least two sons born ~1877). Or a son of one of Patrick's other siblings. Confirms the Ardgroom-Butte chain migration was ongoing — Christopher came to Butte 1904 to work the copper mines, and went to live with his uncle's family (the established Murphy household in Butte).

  • role: niece in household · family confidence: 75 strong

age: 22 · birthplace: Ireland · occupation: Seamstress, Dressmaker · years in US: 4 (immigrated 1906)

NEW PERSON. "Niece" of household head Ellen — meaning a daughter of one of Ellen's Lyne siblings (since Sullivan is her own surname, not married). Likely the same Nora Sullivan who later married John Hanley (per the inbox file "Norah_Sullivan_and_John_Hanley_marriage.pdf", to be processed).

  • role: head of household · family confidence: 100 certain

age: 25 · occupation: Salesman, Clothing store

JJM's own household 2 years into marriage with Agnes Kelly. Salesman at clothing store = Hennessy's.

  • Agnes Kelly Murphy(as printed: Agnes Murphy)
role: spouse · family confidence: 100 certain

    age: 24 · birthplace: Montana

Wife of JJM since Oct 1908. Father Ireland, mother Michigan — matches Mary Chatham Kelly's Michigan birth.

  • Agnes Terese Murphy (m. Llewellyn 1940)(as printed: Agnes Murphy)
role: daughter in household · family confidence: 100 certain

    age: 2 · birthplace: Montana

Agnes Terese — the future Llewellyn bride (1940 LA wedding). Age 2 in April 1910 → b. c. 1908 (Oct 1908 wedding + 9 months = July 1909 earliest, but census ages drift; she was probably b. early 1908 before the wedding, or the age "2" rounds up from "1 yr 9 months" if b. mid-1908).

Also mentioned

  • Patrick Murphy · notable_absence

Patrick is NOT enumerated in the household. Per the 1908 archive clippings, he was committed to the Montana State Hospital at Warm Springs in 1908. He was still institutionalised at the time of the 1910 enumeration and died there in 1912.

Open questions

  • Christopher Murphy (cousin) — confirm parentage via Annals of Beara (Riobárd Ó Dwyer). Plausibly a son of Michael Murphy of Ardgroom (1901 census household).
  • Nora Sullivan (niece) — confirm parentage. Her mother is likely one of Ellen Lyne's sisters who married a Sullivan. Cross-reference with the inbox Sullivan-Hanley marriage record when processed.
  • The vision-transcribed immigration year "1872" for both Ellen and James is a known census error — should be 1892 per the 1900 census + ship log. Census taker likely transposed digits or miscopied from a household informant's quick answer.
