Summary

Murphy household, lines 56-60 of the enumeration sheet (highlighted in green on the source image). Vision-transcribed for full household composition. Members: Line 56 — **Patrick Murphy**, Head, W M, b. Apr 1858 Ireland, age 42, Married 19 years, immigrated 1883, 17 yrs in US, Naturalized (Na). Parents both Ireland. Line 57 — **[Lizzie / Ellen] Murphy**, Wife, W F, b. Sept 1863 Ireland, age 36, Married 19 years, **mother of 4 children with 3 living**, immigrated 1892, 8 yrs in US. Line 58 — **James Murphy**, Son, W M, b. **July 1883** Ireland, age 16, immigrated 1892, 8 yrs in US, **Clothing Salesman** (= Hennessy's; matches CLAUDE.md's "Hennessy boys' dept head ~1904" career arc — he was already on the clothing floor at 16). Line 59 — **Daniel Murphy**, Son, W M, b. Aug 1894 Montana, age 5. Line 60 — **Theresa J. Murphy**, Daughter, W F, b. May 1898 Montana, age 2. HIGHLY VALUABLE — confirms birth dates, immigration years, occupation of teenage JJM, and the painful statistic that Ellen had borne 4 children but only 3 were living in 1900. Wife's first name appears transcribed as "Lizzie [?]" — the vision-script noted uncertainty. Per all other primary records the wife is **Ellen** (= Ellen Lyne Murphy); "Lizzie" may be an enumerator nickname (period nickname for Eliza/Elizabeth, sometimes used loosely for Ellen) or a transcription error on a tight cursive script. The identity is unambiguous given the rest of the household composition.

People — link detail

  • Patrick Murphy (my ancestor)(as printed: Patrick Murphy)
role: head of household · family confidence: 100 certain

age: 42 · sex: M · born: 1858-04 · birthplace: Ireland · status: M (19 years) · occupation: (not visible in this render — likely Saloon Keeper / Bartender) · naturalization: Na (Naturalized) · years in US: 17 (immigrated 1883)

The user's paternal great-great-grandfather. Census confirms birth April 1858 Ireland, naturalized by 1900, 19 years of marriage to Ellen (matches the 13 Feb 1881 Ardgroom marriage cert). Immigration date 1883 differs slightly from the 1884 Stutsman naturalization declaration (which states March 1882 NY arrival) — small drift within a 1-year window, consistent with normal census-self-reporting variance.

  • role: spouse · family confidence: 100 certain

    age: 36 · sex: F · born: 1863-09 · birthplace: Ireland · status: M (19 years)

Same person as Ellen Lyne Murphy. Birth Sept 1863 Ireland (vs prior record "b. ~1862" — Census Sept 1863 is the more precise estimate). Immigrated 1892 — joined Patrick 9-10 years after he arrived. The "Lizzie [?]" reading is likely an enumerator-script ambiguity; the household composition makes the identity unambiguous. MOTHER OF 4 CHILDREN WITH 3 LIVING — the unnamed 4th died young (likely a Butte infant death between 1888-1899 not yet documented).

  • role: son in household · family confidence: 100 certain

    age: 16 · sex: M · born: 1883-07 · birthplace: Ireland · occupation: Clothing Salesman · years in US: 8 (immigrated 1892)

The user's JJM. Census confirms July 1883 Ireland birth and 1892 immigration year. At 16 he was already a "Clothing Salesman" — at Hennessy's Mercantile per CLAUDE.md career arc (cash boy 1898 → boys' dept; by 1900 a "Salesman").

  • Daniel L. Murphy (Butte, b. 1894)(as printed: Daniel Murphy)
role: son in household · family confidence: 100 certain

    age: 5 · sex: M · born: 1894-08 · birthplace: Montana

JJM's younger brother Daniel L. Murphy. Census confirms Aug 1894 Butte birth (he's the first Montana-born child).

  • Theresa Murphy (Seattle)(as printed: Theresa J. Murphy)
role: daughter in household · family confidence: 100 certain

    age: 2 · sex: F · born: 1898-05 · birthplace: Montana

Theresa J. Murphy — later of Seattle. Census confirms May 1898 Butte birth. The middle initial J. is new to the archive.

Open questions

  • Patrick's occupation column (col 13) — not visible in my render of the transcription. Likely "Saloon Keeper" per the existing CLAUDE.md Pat-the-bartender identification. Worth a second look at the transcription_claude.md.
  • The 4th (deceased) child — Ellen had 4 by 1900, only 3 living. The deceased one is unnamed in this source. Would need a Butte infant death record or church burial record to identify.
