The Sagebrushers — JJM's diary of the July-August 1907 Yellowstone Park trip
The Sagebrushers — Jim Murphy's Travelogue through Yellowstone National Park · private family publication · 1907-07-25
Summary
Travelogue diary kept by **James J. Murphy** (= the user's JJM, person_james_murphy_son_of_pat_and_ellen) during a stagecoach / wagon trip from Butte to Yellowstone National Park starting **Thursday 25 July 1907** — the eve of Jim's 23rd birthday. The trip was a year before his marriage to Agnes Kelly (19 Oct 1908). The diary was typed up by **Imelda Bryant** from JJM's original handwritten diary and published by **Murphy Press** in **1994**, edited by **Dan Murphy** (JJM's grandson). **Travel party (the "Sagebrushers")**: 1. Jim Murphy (= JJM) 2. Maud Sheehan 3. Tish Maloney — explicitly named in the diary as "Jim's best friend" 4. Grace Dawson 5. Kate Cosgrove 6. Nell Cosgrove (sister of Kate) 7. George Archibald 8. May Konen 9. William Thoroway 10. Mrs. Wm. Thoroway 11. Owen Brinton 12. Ann Laughrin Plus cook: Mr. and Mrs. Charles ("Charlie") Emerson Horses: Sandy, Ginger, Dwella **Front matter (pages 1-10)** reproduces three certificates documenting JJM and Aggie's identity: - JJM's 1883 Birth and Baptismal Cert (parents Patrick Murphy + Ellen Lyne; sponsors Michael + Catherine Murphy; townland "Sleane" — vision read; cf. "Sleave" per the standalone baptism cert; same townland, spelling drift) - Agnes Bridget Kelly's 1887 Baptismal Cert at St. Patrick's Butte (parents John Kelly + Mary Chatham; sponsors John Cadigan + Emma Mullaney; baptizing priest Rev. Henry J. van de Ven) - JJM's 1906 Naturalization Cert (Petition 1872 / Cert 1712 — cf. 1877/1717 on the standalone naturalization JPG, suggesting either a vision misread of one or two distinct certificate numbers; witnesses Martin Towey + C. H. Gallagher; Clerk William E. Davies; Deputy W. J. Thomas — cf. N. J. Thomas on the standalone cert, likely vision misread of the J./W. initial; Court Clerk's name confirmed as Davies on this transcription) **Partial transcription only** — pages 1-12 extracted on this pass (front matter + the start of Day 1 + Day 2 opening to Twin Bridges). The rest of the diary (Day 2 onward + Yellowstone proper) is queued for a future vision pass via `archive/scripts/transcribe_pdf.py`.
People
- James Joseph "James J." Murphy (b. 1883 Ardgroom; d. 1938 LA)(as printed: James J. Murphy / Jim Murphy)role: narrator · family confidence: 100 certain
The diary's author. Self-portrait at age 22-23, a year before his marriage. Book-chapter material — JJM in his own voice.
- Agnes Kelly Murphy(as printed: Aggie / Agnes (Bridget) Ruth (Kelly) Murphy)role: addressee implied · family confidence: 100 certain
Aggie's 1994-edition note ("Dad's first trip to Yellowstone Park, the year before we were married. You could really make a good story of this if you wanted to do so. It's great reading, especially when I remember I was 'His Hon'!") opens the volume. Her 1887 baptismal cert confirms full baptismal name Agnes Bridget Kelly, b. 29 June 1887 Butte, sponsors John Cadigan + Emma Mullaney, baptized by Rev. Henry J. van de Ven at St. Patrick's.
- Patrick "Tish" Maloughney (b. ~1883 Michigan; JJM's best friend + Chatham cousin of Aggie Kelly)(as printed: Tish Maloney)role: traveling companion · family confidence: 0 not family
EXPLICITLY identified by JJM as "Jim's best friend" on the party list. Confirms decades of Maloney-Murphy ties already surfaced in newspaper clippings (Tish Maloney 1909 marriage announcement; Tish-Margaret-Scully marriage cert; Tish "successful alderman" clipping). NEW person record for what was previously a recurring-in-clippings name.
- Maud Sheehan (1907 Sagebrushers traveler; possibly = Matilda Sheehan)(as printed: Maud Sheehan)role: traveling companion · family confidence: 0 not family
Likely paired with Jim (the diary lists the party "in pairs" and Jim is #1 with Maud at #2). PROVISIONALLY = GEDCOM "Matilda Sheehan" (Maud is a period nickname for Matilda). Worth a back-pass merge if confirmed.
- Grace Dawson (1907 Sagebrushers traveler)(as printed: Grace Dawson)role: traveling companion · family confidence: 0 not family
- Kate Cosgrove (1907 Sagebrushers traveler)(as printed: Kate Cosgrove)role: traveling companion · family confidence: 0 not family
Likely sister of Nell Cosgrove (both on the trip). Not in current GEDCOM as Cosgrove.
- Nell Cosgrove (1907 Sagebrushers traveler)(as printed: Nell Cosgrove)role: traveling companion · family confidence: 0 not family
- George Archibald (1907 Sagebrushers traveler; host on Day 1)(as printed: George Archibald)role: traveling companion · family confidence: 0 not family
EXACT MATCH to GEDCOM "George Archibald". The trip started from "Archibald's house" on Day 1, suggesting his home was the rallying point — possibly a fellow Hennessy clerk or a Centerville/Butte neighbour with a large yard for staging the wagons.
- May (Mae) Konen (1907 Sagebrushers traveler)(as printed: May Konen)role: traveling companion · family confidence: 0 not family
MATCHES GEDCOM "Mae M. Konen" (May = Mae spelling variant). GEDCOM also has John F. Konen (brother / father). Day 1 also names "Mrs. Konen" — May's mother — who packed the party a light lunch.
- William Thoroway (1907 Sagebrushers traveler; with wife)(as printed: William Thoroway)role: traveling companion · family confidence: 0 not family
NEW. Possibly related to Martin Towey (= JJM's 1906 naturalization witness). The two surnames "Thoroway" and "Towey" may be the same family with spelling drift — worth back-pass merge investigation.
- Mrs. Wm. Thoroway (1907 Sagebrushers traveler)(as printed: Mrs. Wm. Thoroway)role: traveling companion · family confidence: 0 not family
- Owen Brinton (1907 Sagebrushers traveler)(as printed: Owen Brinton)role: traveling companion · family confidence: 0 not family
- Ann Laughrin (1907 Sagebrushers traveler)(as printed: Ann Laughrin)role: traveling companion · family confidence: 0 not family
- Charles "Charlie" Emerson (1907 Sagebrushers trip cook)(as printed: Mr. Charles (Charlie) Emerson)role: trip cook · family confidence: 0 not family
- Mrs. Charles Emerson (1907 Sagebrushers trip cook)(as printed: Mrs. Charles Emerson)role: trip cook · family confidence: 0 not family
- Dan Murphy (JJM's grandson; edited the 1994 Sagebrushers edition)(as printed: Dan Murphy)role: editor 1994 edition · family confidence: 100 certain
JJM's grandson; edited the 1994 Murphy Press edition. Per the preface he had close family knowledge of JJM ("my Grandfather Jim") and mentions Imelda Bryant did the original typing.

Open questions
- The 1907 Yellowstone trip diary itself (Day 2 onward) is not yet transcribed. Run `python archive/scripts/transcribe_pdf.py archive/documents/family_documents/1907-07-25_sagebrushers-diary_jjm-yellowstone-trip/source.pdf --pages 12-N --out .../transcription_claude_day2plus.md` to extract the rest. Will surface additional named individuals encountered along the route + places visited.
- William Thoroway vs Martin Towey — possibly same family, possibly same person under different spellings. The 1906 naturalization cert surfaces in this volume's front matter as "Martin Towey" (corroborates the earlier "Towey" reading on the standalone cert).
- Maud Sheehan = Matilda Sheehan (GEDCOM)? Maud is a known period nickname for Matilda. Back-pass merge candidate.
- Tish Maloney is now firmly anchored as JJM's "best friend" in 1907. CLAUDE.md key-recurring-figures section should be updated to add Tish Maloney as a top peer; previous newspaper-clipping evidence for Tish (1909 wedding, alderman success, etc.) now sits in a much-stronger personal-relationship context.
- Petition / Certificate numbers on the reproduced naturalization cert (Petition 1872 / Cert 1712) differ from the standalone JPG's (Petition 1877 / Cert 1717). Two possibilities: (a) vision misread on one of the two transcriptions (very plausible — "2" and "7" can look similar in cursive), or (b) two distinct certs at slightly different numbers. The standalone JPG should be checked at higher fidelity to resolve.
- Imelda Bryant the typist — possibly the same Imelda Murphy listed in JJM + Aggie's daughter set (Imelda Mary Murphy per the GEDCOM), if she married a Bryant. Would explain the family insider involvement in the 1994 edition production. Worth a back-pass check.
