Summary

Short obituary for Lewis Wilson, native of St. Paul Minn., Butte resident 22 years (since c. 1922 — though the next-day funeral notice gives different background; see crossref). Died early Monday morning April 3 1944 at the family home, 822 West Silver, Butte. Father of Joseph L. Wilson, Butte automobile dealer. **Survivors:** - Widow Mrs. Clara Wilson - Son and daughter-in-law Mr. and Mrs. Joseph L. Wilson of Butte - **Son-in-law and daughter Mr. and Mrs. Dan Murphy of Butte** - Brother William DeKay in Los Angeles - Sister-in-law Mrs. Mae McLeod in Pony, Mont. Body at the White chapel; funeral 11am Wednesday Apr 5 by Rev. Mr. A. C. Caton; burial in Pony. ARCHIVE SIGNIFICANCE. Wilson is not directly family BUT his son-in-law is "Dan Murphy of Butte." Another Butte Murphy in-law connection. The next-day funeral coverage (1944-04-05) has fuller biographical detail and gives the brother's first name as "Frank C. DeKay" — likely the obituarist used different sources; one of "William" / "Frank C." is the printed error. Wilson's son Joseph L. Wilson (Butte automobile dealer) and daughter Mrs. Dan Murphy are book-context for the Butte business-class 1940s milieu.

Also mentioned

  • Lewis Wilson · deceased_subject

Native of St. Paul Minn., Butte resident 22 years. Father of Joseph L. Wilson (Butte automobile dealer). Father-in-law of Dan Murphy of Butte. Not promoted to a person record; held in mentioned only.

  • Mrs. Clara Wilson · widow
  • Joseph L. Wilson · son_butte_auto_dealer
  • Mr. and Mrs. Dan Murphy · daughter_and_son_in_law

**Dan Murphy of Butte** — another candidate Butte Murphy. Not enough distinguishing detail in this clipping to identify which Dan Murphy; this is a namesake-only-tier reference (surname + region + plausible name) UNLESS the unnamed Mrs. Dan Murphy (Wilson's daughter, b. somewhere between 1904 and ~1922?) can be cross-referenced. Held in mentioned only; not promoted to a person record.

  • William DeKay · brother_in_los_angeles

Brother of the deceased. The 1944-04-05 funeral notice gives 'Frank C. DeKay' as the brother's name; one of the two printings is in error. LA address is geographically consistent with the Butte → LA Murphy migration pattern seen elsewhere in the archive.

Open questions

  • place_pony_mt — add to /vocab/places.yaml (Madison County mining town).
  • Dan Murphy of Butte (1944) — distinct from any of the Butte Murphys already in people.yaml? Should be flagged for a future Dan-Murphy-in-Butte audit.
  • William DeKay vs Frank C. DeKay — which is the brother's actual name? Reconcile on back-pass.
