Summary

Silver Bow County Marriage License + Certificate B 2146. The License was sworn 2 Nov 1909; the marriage was solemnized 3 Nov 1909 at **St. Mary's church, Butte** by **Father English** (cert + the more-proximate 1909-11-04 Anaconda Standard wedding announcement agree; the 1909-11-06 Butte Daily Post 3 days later garbled the church as "St. Lawrence" and priest as "Rev. Father Batens" — Butte Daily Post was wrong; cert + Anaconda Standard are authoritative). Witnesses on the cert: **J. P. Deegan** and **Alice M. Scully** (presumably the bride's relative). The certificate was filed for record 9 Nov 1909. Court Clerk: John J. Foley; Deputy: W. F. Sullivan. **HOW THEY MET**: Per the 1909-11-04 Anaconda Standard, "Mr. Maloughney and his bride have for some years been clerks in different departments at Hennessy's" — both worked at Hennessy's in different departments, met there. Same store where JJM Sr was a clerk (boys' clothing) and where JJM Jr would later not work (he went into appliances). Hennessy's emerges as the central Butte Irish-American social-and-employment node. **Groom**: **Patrick Maloughney** — known in the user's family archive and the 1907 Sagebrushers Diary as "Tish Maloney" (the Irish-rooted surname spelling "Maloughney" anglicizes to "Maloney"). White, age 26 (b. ~1883), born at **Hurontown (or similar), Houghton County, Michigan**. Residing in Butte at marriage. Not previously married. Son of **Thomas Maloughney** and **Catherine Maloughney whose maiden name was Catherine CHATHAM**. **Bride**: **Margaret L. Scully**, White, age 22 (b. ~1887), born at **Largent (or similar), Cook County, Illinois**. Residing in Butte at marriage. Not previously married. Daughter of **Lawrence Scully** and **Julia Scully whose maiden name was Julia LYNCH**. **MAJOR FINDING — the Chatham connection**: Tish Maloughney's mother is **Catherine Chatham** (born Chatham, m. Thomas Maloughney). Agnes Kelly Murphy's mother is **Mary Chatham Kelly** (born Chatham, m. John Kelly per the 1908 Murphy-Kelly wedding parents). Both Chathams are Michigan-born per the existing archive. Almost certainly **Chatham sisters** (or close kin) — making **Tish Maloughney and Aggie Kelly first cousins via their Chatham mothers**. This explains the depth of the JJM-Tish friendship anchored in the 1907 Sagebrushers Diary: Tish was already family-by-Chatham before JJM married into the Chatham side via Aggie in 1908. **A second Lynch connection**: Margaret L. Scully's mother is **Julia Lynch** (maiden name). Same surname as Judge J. J. Lynch the AOH peer of JJM — possibly related (Lynch is a common Irish surname so coincidence possible, but worth flagging).

Open questions

  • Catherine Chatham Maloughney = Mary Chatham Kelly's sister? Strong circumstantial evidence (both Chathams, both Michigan- born, both married into Butte Irish-American families) but needs corroboration. The 1940 Mary Chatham Kelly obit listed her surviving sisters as Mrs. Nellie Tracy, Mrs. William Pascoe, and Mrs. Agnes Brennan — no Catherine Maloughney among them. So either Catherine had predeceased Mary (died before 1940) OR Catherine is from a separate Chatham family OR Catherine was a more distant Chatham relation (cousin, aunt) of Mary rather than a sister.
  • Julia Lynch Scully — coincidence or related to Judge J. J. Lynch the JJM AOH peer? Worth a back-pass check.
  • "Maloughney" vs "Maloney" — formal Irish spelling preserved on the legal record. Newspaper clippings and the Sagebrushers diary use the anglicized "Maloney". Both refer to the same person Patrick "Tish" Maloughney.
