## Column 1 # Declares Farm Prosperity Not Due to Supports HELENA (P) — An American Farm Bureau Federation spokesman here Wednesday attacked "a delusion" claims that price supports were responsible for farm prosperity from 1942-1952 in his talk to 22 captains and workers of the Montana Farm Bureau. "This delusion . . . is one of the most dangerous mistakes that anyone can make," Roger Fleming, Washington, D.C., national federation executive secretary, said. "Farm prices were relatively high during this period because of war demands and postwar foreign aid. "It has been only during the last two years that we have come to see some of the true character of price supports that have little or no relationship to the supply and demand situation. Fleming cited political football factors in farm prices by adding: "Farmers are in a bind today. We should realize this fact when analyzing political statements. There are far more people with a short term political interest in cheap food than there are concerned with farmers actually not getting high real income on a per family level. George Dotil, Helena, state president, presided at the session. # Six Hospitalized in Auto Wreck HELENA—Three Helena children, their two mothers and their grandmother all were in St. John Hospital beds Wednesday after a freak wreck which sent their car off a city street and partially filled with icy water. The car went off Grant Street, but apparently the children and women were saved from over-exposure. The women are Mrs. Minnie Kreatinghouse and her sister Mrs. Blanche Boonhaus of 735 Fifth Avenue East, and their mother, Mrs. Doris Lees of East Helena. Mrs. Lees reportedly has been in serious condition with a head injury. Mrs. Kreating is being treated for an injury in the ovary in the pelvic region, and Mrs. Boonhaus has an injury in the chest. Although all were painfully hurt and suffered shock, none was believed serious. The children were Mrs. Kreatinghouse and infant daughter and Mrs. Boonhaus's son. The accident occurred at about 7 p.m. when they were returning from a trip to Missoula. Mrs. was reported driving the 1900 Chevrolet tudor sedan. A key patch on the highway was blamed for throwing the car out of control and onto its side in the borrow pit. One of the wheels came off the wreck and freed the others. The accident took place about two miles south of Helena on U.S. Highway 91. The women were quoted as saying the water in the borrow pit was not deep enough in which to drown, but they and the children were covered with mud and chilled by the drenching water. The women were more be-nighted than indignant over the motorist who stopped, but refused to aid them. Later, Dean Stallinger of Jefferson City took the women and children to Albankers in his car, where they met a flagman attendant, and they ran into Helena. Dr. C. S. Meeker, 2271 a pediatrician, happened along and administered first aid in Albankers. Highway Patrolman Clifford M. Small investigated the accident. ## Treed by Moose WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS (P) — Young Viola Jordan was walking in an open field when a huge moose she saw it. She knew her gun was to light to use for protection. Besides it was protected by law. Then it saw her. It charged. Viola was treed up in a yellow pine tree with her gun. For nearly an hour the big moose kept her up the tree, then sauntered away. ## Column 2 # Treasure State News # Highway Letting Set for Today HELENA (UP) — The State Highway Commission will let 11 highway construction contracts Thursday after bids are opened for the 11 jobs at eight counties. The jobs up for letting are, by counties: Wibaux — Grade surface and road mix of 7.8 miles of the Wibaux South Road. Madison—Grade, surface and road mix oil 2.2 miles of the Virginia City Hill Highway. Silver Bow—Grade, and high bituminous road mix pavement on the Nislier east-west road; grade and surface of the Nislier-South highway; construction of an overpass on the Utah and Midland railway tracks for U. S. Highway 10 east of Silver Bow. Roosevelt — Grade, surface, and road mix of 7.0 miles of the Bainville East-West road. Fallon County — Construction of a treated timber pile bridge on Peirce North Road, surface road mix oil 4.4 miles of the Box-Elder South Road. Mineral — Yellowstone — Grade, surface, road mix oil 9.8 miles of the Alberton Billing road. Lake — Grade, surface pave mix of 6.5 miles of the Charlo Road. Sanders—Grade, surface and road mix of 1.3 miles of the Confusion Road. ## Libby Man Dies After Shooting Accident WHITEFISH (UP) — David W. Sallaman, 23-year-old Libby lumber worker, died Tuesday evening in a Whitefish hospital following a shooting accident near Eureka Saturday. Lincoln County authorities at Libby said no inquest is planned. They said all information points to an entirely accidental shooting, though Sallaman fell dead. Sallaman was a graduate of Montana School of Mines and Montana State University in 1953. He was employed as a U. S. forest service smoke jumper and then had been about to go to work for Lumber Co. at Libby. At the time of the accident he was working in Christmas tree business near Eureka. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Carl L. Sallaman of Las Cruces, N. M. ## Air Force Generals Get Their Elk GREAT FALLS, Mont. (P) — A successful elk hunting trip out of Augusta has been reported by Lt. and Maj. Gen. Walker C. Sweeney, who was reported in command of May field and the Strategic Air Command. Sweeney the 15th Air Force. The Great Falls Air Force Base officers and their SAC commanders did their hunting over the weekend in the Augusta area and were guests at school A. B. Guthrie, Jr., the author, before they went into the mountains on horseback for the hunt. Tuesday night LeMay returned to his Offutt base. Sweeney to Riverside, Calif. ## Bottomly to Tour Western Montana HELENA (P) — John Bottomly, seeking reelection to the nonpartisan post of clerk of Montana Supreme Court, left Helena Wednesday for a tour of western Montana. He will stop in Butte, Anaconda, Missoula, Kalispell, and Columbia Falls, Kalispell and Libby this week. Bottomly is opposed by Dist. Judge John McClernan of Butte. ## Legion to Meet in Lewistown LEWISTOWN — The Montana American Legion will hold its 1955 convention in Lewistown, it decided in June. Don Yost, commander of the Lewistown post, announced selection of the convention city. ## Man Blows Himself Up in Courthouse EDINBURG, Tex. (P) — A man blew himself to pieces in Hidalgo County courthouse Wednesday and wrecked the second floor of the structure. the explosion wrecked the Edinburg business district. No injuries to any others were reported. He carried a bag apparently filled with explosives. He was identified as Harry Miller, about 60, of Beallton, Tex., who had been under the care of a doctor. Stimulated Musterole, the only rub made in three special strengths. ## Column 3 # Young Hunter Is Accidentally Shot Jerry Cuchins, 11, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gene Cuchins of Ione, Placer, was in St. James Hospital Wednesday night after he was wounded apparently in a groin while rabbit hunting with several other boys in the nearby Timber Butte area. The youth had the 22 caliber slug in his groin in the hospital and was confined for observation. The slug apparently embedded in flesh on top of a foot appear and had apparently wound the lad. Sheriff's deputies said they were told the Cuchins boy got "in the line of fire" of another person's companion, who they identified as James Peterson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alf O. Peterson of 316 California Ave. The bad boy reportedly walked home and was taken to the hospital by his mother, Mrs. Gene Patterson. The mishap occurred about 5 p.m. It was the second such accident in Silver Bow county. Saturday, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Boguski, of 628 W. Fifth, Walkerville, was injured Saturday when he was apparently struck by a 22 caliber bullet. He was with companions chasing rabbits in the Walkerville area. ## 94 State Drivers Lose Licenses HELENA (UP) — Ninety-four Montana drivers' licenses were revoked at the State Highway Commission's regular monthly and driver's license hearing. Thursday the commission will also let 11 highway construction jobs. The director of state patrolman Glenn Schultz met with the commission's director Paul Craney to make a report on the driver license revocations the commission recommended. The commission accepted Schultz's recommendations of 38 other Montana drivers for additional penalty because of multiple violations or accidents. Schultz said that 88 of those licenses revoked were because of driving under the influence of alcohol. ## Bids for Oil, Gas Leasing Announced WASHINGTON (P) — the government Wednesday opened sealed bids totaling $70,482 for oil and gas leases on 11,000 acres in the Cedar Creek Field in Roosevelt County, Mont., located about 30 miles west of Bowman. The Bureau of Land Management offered the land in 17 separate parcels. Winston L. Cox, Billings, Mont., was high bidder on three parcels offering $29,623 for lease of the largest parcel, tracts 2, 8, and 11. Sunray-Vacuum Oil Co., Inc., Billings, bid high at $12,652 for tracts 2 and 4, including a total of 1,398 acres. Carter Oil Co., Miles City, Mont., was high at $19,645 for parcels 13 and 14, including 120 acres. National Associated Oil Co., Casper, Wyo., bid high at $5,500 for parcels or tracts 6 and 7. (AP) — Two bodies had been recovered and two other persons were believed dead Wednesday in a fire ravaged hotel struck by lightning in a remote thunderstorm. Firemen recovered the bodies from the a 90-year-old retired employee and police woman, identified as Lonnie Miss. [illegible] Mrs. Eva Bebout, owner and operator of the 94-room Colorado Hotel, formerly the Alamo Hotel, said two men were still missing. # Miss Mary Kelly Dies in California Miss Mary (Mayme) Kelly, well known former Butte and Walkerville resident, died last Wednesday afternoon at her home in Los Angeles, Calif. Death was attributed to a heart attack. Miss Kelly, a native of Walkerville, moved to the Los Angeles area, was employed for several years at State department Store. She left the Mining City a number of years ago to make her home in California, but had visited here at various times. She is survived by one sister-in-law and two sisters. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Kelly of Arcadia, Mrs. W. J. Pat Hannifin, one of Butte; several cousins, nieces, and several nephews and nieces in California. The body is in the Cunningham and O'Connor Undertaking Parlors, 800 Washington Ave., South Los Angeles. # Negro Is Promoted to General's Rank WASHINGTON (P)—Benjamin O. Davis Jr., son of the nation's first Negro general, followed his father's footsteps Wednesday to become the second of his race to achieve a general's rank. President Eisenhower gave Davis, 41, a recess appointment as a brigadier general in the Air Force. His name was on a list of Air Force officers given recess appointments to varying general ships. The appointments are subject to Senate confirmation. Normally, confirmation is granted as a routine matter. ## Column 5 # Religious Week to Be Noted HELENA (P) — Religious emphasis week will be Nov. 14-18 at Montana State University to "present to students the implications of religion on a wholesome basis," said Dr. John Lawson, director of the Montana School of Religion, here. He said the public speakers would speak during the observance, sponsored by the university, the affiliated School of Religion and the Student Religious Commission. Speakers include the Rev. Hackett, Western Baptist theological seminary. # Finns on Another Hunger Strike LOS ANGELES (UP)—George and Charles Finn, 34-year-old twins, Wednesday disclosed they were on another hunger strike because a judge ruled they could not have a jury trial in their dispute with the government. The twins went on a 22-day fast before they were released on bail from a federal prison for making an illegal "citizen's arrest" of U. S. Atty. Laughlin Waters, said they would continue the fasting until Federal Judge William C. Want a good roof—then call # Bitterroot Valley Pioneer Is Dead HAMILTON (P) — Mrs. Judith Chaffin, 93, believed to be the oldest Bitterroot Valley pioneer, died in Hamilton Wednesday. Mrs. Summers came to the valley in 1901 with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Elijah Chaffin. She was born in 1861 at Salem, S. Dak. Survivors include a brother, one son and three daughters.
