# CONNELL CHARITY DONATIONS CITED ## Former Butte Man Made Huge Gifts, Check of Estate Shows. Michael J. Connell, 81, former Butte capitalist who died suddenly at the Belen Ohio Gun club in Los Angeles, California, during a hunting trip last two years ago, a third of a million dollars in charities, it was learned yesterday after a check of the Connell estate records. Among the multimillionaire's recent gifts to Los Angeles were the following: Parent-Teacher association, $25,000 fund, $5,000; Good Hope Hospital association, $100,000; Catholic Creche, $15,000; philharmonic orchestra, $50,000, and to make up a deficit in the Orches chen budget for 1934, $50,000. According to some accounts, Connell was socially of California's best rank. For years he and Mrs. Connell were patrons of the annual Midwinter which was a social event of southern California, and it was a tradition for Mr. Connell to appear each year dressed as Robin Hood. Considerable years each year Connell came to the United States at the age of 14 and spent many years in Butte, during which he made his fortune, he moved in 1903 to Los Angeles. He was chairman of the board of the Commercial Savings bank of Los Angeles, director of a dozen or more corporations, and held large real estate holdings including six office buildings in downtown Los Angeles. His home at 605 South Figueroa street in that city is said to house a treasure in jewels, art objects and valuable furniture. --- ## MENTAL CRUELTY BASIS IN SUIT FOR DIVORCE Charging extreme mental cruelty, Mrs. Agnes Downey started action in district court yesterday for a divorce from Martin E. Downey. The couple married at Anaconda, April 6, 1921. In an order by Judge T. E. Downey, Grant Burnell was named administrator, was authorized to mortgage orchard lands as personal property—in the estate of John Urbanck. On petition of Pietro A. Noli, administrator, a notice of distribution in the estate of Antonio Valentino was set for September 3 for ing hearing before Judge Downey. --- ## BUTTE ATHLETE TO ENTER ALABAMA 'U' James Murphy, popular Butte athlete, left yesterday for Tuscaloosa where he will enroll at the University of Alabama law school. The young man is the grandson and namesake of Jere J. Murphy, chief of police here. --- ## CLARENCE O. MAGILL, 75, PROMINENT RESIDENT OF MINING CITY, DIES Death came to Clarence O. Magill, 75, yesterday at a local hospital after a long illness. He had lived in Butte most of his life during the past 41 years, where he was employed as a stationary engineer. His home was at 494 West Mercury street. He is survived by his wife, Mary Magill; a daughter, Mrs. Fred P. Chodosh and Mr. Chodosh and four children; Fred Babcock Jr., and Mrs. Babcock; Holmes J. Babcock, and a brother and a sister in California. Richards funeral home has charge of arrangements. Funeral arrangements will be announced later. ### MURPHY RITES HELD. Mrs. Ellen Murphy was buried yesterday in Holy Cross cemetery with services conducted at St. Patrick's church. Requiem high mass was celebrated. The body was taken from the Colonial room of the Duggan-Mahon funeral parlors to the church. Rev. Everett Oles celebrated the mass. Rev. B. H. Treanor, deacon; Rev. R. V. Cavanaugh, sub-deacon; Rev. M. D. English, Rev. J. M. Nolan and Rev. M. J. Leonard, were at the services. Arthur Drynan and Mrs. James Tracy, accompanied by Mrs. Margaret McHale, sang the requiem. Rev. J. M. Nolan officiated at the cemetery. Pallbearers were Judge J. J. Lynch, Lee Wilson, James M. Lynch, E. M. O'Keefe, Jack Penney and John F. Hogan. ### F. J. MURPHY FUNERAL. A final farewell was paid to services for Frank J. Murphy yesterday morning in a funeral mass celebrated at St. Ann's[?] Patrick's cemetery. The body was taken from the home of his mother, Mrs. Ellen Murphy, 808 East Metals street, to the church. The mass was celebrated by Rev. Father George Lambert of Anaconda. Child sng the same requiem. Rev. W. F. Joyce read the prayers at the cemetery. The floral offerings were so numerous that a special car was required. Pallbearers were Frank Lane, John Duffy, John Harrington, John Cavanaugh, Francis Duffy and Edward Bean. Daly-Shea mortuary directed the funeral arrangements. ### BIRTH ANNOUNCED. Word of the birth of a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Coleman in Cranford, N. J., was received here yesterday by Mr. and Mrs. William Donovan. Mrs. Coleman is formerly lived in Butte and graduated from the Girls' High school here. She is now connected with a prominent publishing company of New York City. --- ## NEW BOOK ON INDIANS OF MONTANA IS ISSUED The Blackfeet Indians of Glacier National park are the subject of a new book recently published. It is the first of its kind ever published, the volume being illustrated and said to be as colorful as an Indian blanket. Contains products of the brush and pen of two of the foremost Blackfeet Indian art experts of the Northwest; one a well-known picture publisher, the other a well-known author; it is announced. The drawings are reproduced artistically through full color reproduction on the special paintings of Winold Reiss. The originals have been the subject of great art exhibits throughout the country. The famous artist, it is said, has spent his summers among the Blackfeet in the "Alps of the Shining Mountains." The volume also presents the first authentic historical account of the Blackfeet Indians, known as "Out of the North." This is the work of Frank Bird Linderman, the author of the "Indian Way" stories and several other volumes relating to the plains Indians. Fifty years among the Indians, he came west to live among the Blackfeet, trapping, ranching and the story of the last Indian frontier. Published in the unique volume, it is distributed by the Great Northern Railway. --- ## COUNTY SCHOOLS GET $3,750 FROM STATE A total of $3,750 has been received by Silver Bow county as its share of a state general school fund—a fund created by the last legislature and to be distributed to various districts for transportation. The amount appropriated was divided in net sums as follows: $1,760 for county high school and $1,990 for high schools. Local state highway patrol officers yesterday issued a stern warning about signs leading into arterial highways and apprehended five motorists to come to a complete stop before entering such a highway. The five motorists were arrested for this offense. Patrolmen also stated that livestock must be kept off the highway only in places with legal fences and must not wander on roads. Patrolman Bob Wright reported a collision early Saturday afternoon. He said the cars were driven by Rosetta Lee, of McMinnville, Ore., and Roasoe B. Smith of 230 West Granite street. In each car, Wright said. Both cars were badly damaged. Sunday, Patrolman Wright reported another car driven by Alice A. O'Brien, 641 Illinois street, for driving 60 miles per hour between Missoula and Butte. Also arrested: James Bugni, 18 Cooper street, Idaho Falls, for reckless driving in Evans street; for the same offense, he also arrested Walter [illegible] of Gaylord street, for driving on to the highway without stopping at an overpass; Bill Gray of Lima for not having a driver's license; one truck of greater width than 80 inches at D. W. Davidson in Evans street, for the same violation. Patrolman Jack Dawson reported highway traffic violations: John [illegible] of 231 Wyoming street, for improper license plates on his car; Ruth Foreman of 101 East Silver avenue for passing another car on the corner of East Church street, for not having 1935 license plates. --- ## DIVORCE DEGREE SIGNED BY JUDGE T. E. DOWNEY A decree of divorce in an action of Mabel Crawford against O. K. Crawford was signed by Judge T. E. Downey in district court yesterday and filed in the clerk of the court's office. Judgment in the matter was ordered withheld by Judge Downey after hearing on plaintiff's proofs. The defendant failed to appear further after his demurrer to the complaint was overruled. Cruelty was charged. Plaintiff asks custody of a child of the marriage and sought alimony and support. The couple married at Seattle, Washington, June 15, 1923. Citing failure to provide as basis, Mrs. Cecelia Fleming sued yesterday for a divorce from William T. Fleming. They were married on October 14, 1915. The plaintiff asks the custody of two children. Maurice Fleming was named defendant in a divorce contested by Cecelia Fleming in district court papers yesterday. She as plaintiff seeks restoration of her maiden name "Garvey." The couple married here August 14, 1931. --- ## WPA ADMINISTRATOR TO ADDRESS EXCHANGEITES The works progress administrator for the Montana district tomorrow will be the subject of an address before the Butte exchange club at its noon luncheon at the New Finlen hotel. The speaker will be Trent J. Davis, the local WPA administrator. The chairman of the meeting will be J. H. Kelly. Another feature of the meeting will be the presentation of the member of the year award, the most distinguished conferred by the club. The award is to be made, it is announced, by the club, and Edward Leavers will have charge of the entertainment program. --- ## DR. J. M. SCANLAND IS BUTTE VISITOR Dr. J. M. Scanland, who was for years connected with the Montana State Normal college before his headship of the institution during recent years, is now a Butte visitor. Dr. Scanland, who served for a period of years after he terminated his connection with the State Normal, and on during his years on the Coast had great success and great recognition in poetry, is now a resident of Rapid City, S. D. "I want to revisit Butte this morning," he said yesterday at the New Finlen. "I came over to Butte to greet as many of my old friends as possible." --- ## CHURCH CHOIR TO BE HELD TODAY The First Baptist church and Sunday school will hold its annual summer picnic and choir outing today at Columbia Gardens. Officers stated the program was a program of sports with Bill Hawes in charge of athletics and also many contests for youngsters. All members and families of church members are invited. Coffee, cream, sugar, corn cobs and plates will be provided. Those attending will take their own box lunches. --- ## DEER LODGE BUREAU ### HELMVILLE BUSY ON RODEO PLANS ### Committee Hopes to Make Show Best of Year in This Region. DEER LODGE, Aug. 26—(Special) The Powell County rodeo committee has made numerous trips to Deer Lodge [town] and Helmville, deciding on the rodeo to be held at Helmville, Sept. [illegible]. Extensive plans to make the affair one of the largest of the year are underway. Bucking horses, wild steers and expert performers in novelty races have all been included in the performance. Negotiations are being completed. The animals are being purchased this week. Replies from all communities in the state have been received, indicating the people from every corner of the county. A chicken dinner is to be served by the ladies of St. Thomas church at Helmville. Assisting in the serving will bring the day of fun to a close. It is expected that the usual crowd will gather for the affair because even it has been a tradition for many years to come together to the north end of Powell county for this entertainment. --- ## 1,600 MONTANANS AT FAIR ON STATE'S DAY DEER LODGE, Aug. 26—(Special) Friends received a communication from Miss M. E. Parks, a former Deer Lodge resident now residing in San Diego, California, stating that she at the exposition more than 1,600 former Montanans gathered on Montana's day were in attendance. W. B. Ewing, former senator and collector of customs in San Diego, presided, was the principal speaker and gave the history of Montana during the program in the amphitheater. ### SISTER HYPATIA BETTER. DEER LODGE, Aug. 26—(Special) Sister Hypatia, teaching at St. Ann's, Coughlin of this city, is improving greatly. She came down to Deer Lodge from Helena to attend the sisters' convocation at Sacred Heart. She has been a patient at St. Joseph's hospital for some time. Sister Hypatia is Superior at St. Thomas' Academy at Ronan. ### DEER LODGE NOTES. DEER LODGE, Aug. 26—(Special) Mrs. J. R. Culver and Mrs. Warren J. Organ have returned from the Eastern Star convention in Missoula. George Ugland has returned from a business trip to Aberdeen, S. D., and other Midwest cities. He returned to his work in the municipal car department today. Miss Mary E. Hostetter, spinster, Miss Florence Hill left by motor for Portland Saturday and will spend the greater portion of the week with relatives there. Mrs. Campbell, supervisor of the Milwaukee railroad ladies car, returned from Tacoma here yesterday from Tacoma. --- ## FEDERAL AGENTS SEIZE CAR, ARREST DRIVER ON ILLICIT LIQUOR COUNT A new automobile was seized and a man giving the name of Maurice J. McKewn was arrested Sunday morning on an alley between Montana and Wyoming streets, by federal liquor agents, according to reports. McKewn was arraigned yesterday before Fred L. Root, deputy States commissioner, on charges of violation of the National prohibition law. The accused was released on bonds of $500 and set for trial at next term of court. According to agents, McKewn was making a delivery of alleged moonshine liquor when apprehended. Four gallons of the asserted moonshine were confiscated and, in jail a small amount, retained from a bottle was destroyed. Dr. and Mrs. J. C. Tyrand and daughter, of Whitefish, are visiting Mrs. Nita Orion of Hardin, Mont., and yesterday for a tour of Glacier national park by automobile. While in Butte the party was entertained were guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. R. A. Tyrand, 311 South Crystal street. On a plea of guilty to operating an automobile without proper license plates, John Petersen was fined $2 and costs of $1.50 when he appeared in Justice John Corbitt's court. He was arrested by Patrolman John Flanagan. Griffith Cremer was charged with driving an automobile not equipped with adequate rear-vision mirrors by Patrolman Flanagan. Cremer is appeared in court before Justice Corbitt for arraignment Saturday, was fined $2 plus $1.50 court costs. Imposed on George Carver by Justice Rudolph Hoegger was $10. Carver was charged in a complaint by Patrolman Albert Wright with not equipping a truck with proper license plates. William G. Flanagan was fined $2 and $1.50 by Judge Hoegger on a complaint of operating an automobile on a curve. The complaint was signed by the same Patrolman Flanagan. A continuation of Clifford Kremer, Stafford was dismissed yesterday by the county attorney's office. The matter had been pending before Justice Benjamin Hoegger. --- ## FINANCE COMMITTEE OF CITY APPROVES BILLS The finance committee of the Butte city council met yesterday afternoon and approved city bills of $18,147.30. These bills, for which council vouchers were issued at the present week, are against a number of departments including the parks and playgrounds, special road construction, special street patching and others. --- ## BOY INJURED WHEN STRUCK BY AUTO Bobby Lee, 9, of 619 South Washington street, suffered an injured left shoulder and ear laceration yesterday when he was hit by a car at the corner of Washington and Galena streets. The boy was on his way to see Officer James Mooney, who investigated, and the driver of the vehicle, 527 South Montana street, was told to take the child to a doctor who picked the youngster up and took him to Murphey's drug store. Lee was treated by Dr. N. J. O'Keefe and later returned to his home. --- ## UTILITY HOLDING COMPANY BILL SIGNED BY PRESIDENT WASHINGTON, Aug. 26.—(P)— President Roosevelt today signed the bill regulating utility holding companies. Present when the pen was applied were Senators Wheeler and Barkley and Representative Rayburn, the congressional strategists, but Benjamin V. Cohen and Thomas G. Corcoran, young New Deal attorneys. The measure, which has been warmly disputed, opponents accusing both of "lobbying" and Corcoran of trying to coerce a congressman to get the bill passed. The bill empowers the securities and exchange commission to regulation of securities, sales of power, and financing and operating conditions of utility holding companies to prevent, where strictly necessary "pyramiding," the bill calls for compulsory abolition of holding companies upon broad general strategies, but Benjamin V. Cohen and Thomas G. Corcoran, New Deal attorney. The bill shall become effective January 1, 1936. --- ## WRIGHT RECORD ON COAST PROBED ### Man Arrested Here for Deer Lodge Crime in Trouble Before. Under the name of Herman Pelke, Albert Wright, 32, arrested here Friday on a half dozen separate [illegible] bullets, had a previous record, it was said, according to advice received yesterday by Sheriff Larry Connors from Jesse Moore, sheriff of the department of justice bureau at San Francisco. Wright or Pelke was three arrested in San Francisco on the charges and served a six-month jail sentence, according to information. A telegram did not carry a complete detail of the offenses Pelke's previous record. Wright was apprehended by local officers Saturday after reports of John McArrten, a prison guard, at the [illegible] Montana state prison, who was attacked and severely beaten and robbed. Information regarding Wright was obtained from Sheriff Larry Connors, where the man is awaiting trial on an assault charge. --- ## SENTENCES SUSPENDED BY JUDGE BUCKLEY FOR PAIR HELD AS VAGRANTS Jail sentences of 15 days each were given by Police Judge L. A. Buckley yesterday to two men found guilty of state vagrancy. The men were arrested on Friday by Officers Tom Marshall, John Gerry and Dan Reagan after Joe Vodak was arrested a few hours earlier from [illegible] same street. Both were attempting to "run the slot" on the [illegible] street card. They were fined $10 for creating a disturbance and upon non-payment of fine were committed to jail. Wright was assessed bonds of $20 each for city vagrancy. Tourists are spending more in Belgium than for several summers. --- ## OUTING HELD BY POSTAL EMPLOYES ### Groups Join for Picnic Program at Spring Hill Grounds. Between 200 and 300 postal employes from Butte, Helena, Anaconda, Phillipsburg, Southern Cross and neighboring points gathered at the Spring Hill forestry recreational area yesterday for an annual outing. An extensive program of athletic and socializing baseball game which was called on account of darkness with other activities for workers to hold the rivals—provided entertainment. Refreshments were provided by the families and guests of Joe Deco, William Lavelle, Cecil Brown, Fred Ray, Argand, James Hardy, Arthur Berry and Dick Heany, heads of the postal employees organization. Gordon Wordsworth, grandson of the poet, has died at Bydal, England, aged 73. Modernistic flats are being built at Bombay, India. --- ## Butte Briefs BABY GIRL—Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Le Roux, 118 North Excelsior, are parents of a daughter, born yesterday at St. James hospital. DISMISSED—Patients dismissed yesterday from St. James hospital were Mrs. Lydia Laplante and Mrs. Frances, 116 West Granite, and Mrs. Mary Fleming, 315 East Quartz, has been returned to her home. IN HOSPITAL—Patients admitted yesterday at the Murray hospital of Mrs. Le Roux, 174 Farragut, Mrs. William Boucher, 1944 South Gaylord, and Mrs. M. Masters of Rocker was dismissed. RETURNS FROM VISIT—Margaret Costello, formerly of Butte and now in residence in Berkeley, Calif., returned Sunday noon from Missoula where she had been visiting grandparents and other relatives. TO BERKELEY—Mrs. B. K. Sorensen returned to her home in Berkeley, Calif., after a week's visit with her sister, Miss Eva Hanson and other relatives in the city. Mrs. Sorensen is the former Miss Della Kostinen of Butte. --- ## PERMIT ISSUED FOR REMODELING STORE A $4,000 building permit was issued yesterday by Pat Hanrathy, city engineer, to the Cahill-Mooney Company, a community-oriented business at Butte. The permit covers remodeling of their building at 39 west Park street. The remodeled building, when completed, will be occupied by the Florist company, which is already located at 38 North Main street. Secondhand permit covers also for Mrs. M.
