Summary

Family-written obituary for **Marie A. Schueller Murphy** (= JJM Jr's wife since 22 Oct 1936; = the unnamed "Marie A. Schueller" of the corresponding 1936 LA marriage license). Written first-person plural by her six surviving adult children. ## VITAL DATA - Born **31 August 1916 in Ferdinand, Idaho** - Family moved to Los Angeles when she was young - Worked briefly as a beautician - Married **Jim Murphy in 1936** (= person_james_j_murphy_jr_la, the 1958 Anaheim resume subject; full date 22 Oct 1936 per the existing marriage license) - Husband **Jim died 1972** ("we lost Dad in 1972") — fixes JJM Jr's death year at 1972 - Settled with family in **La Mesa CA in 1959** (immediately after the 1958 Anaheim resume; the resume itself was likely the job-search that led to the La Mesa move) - After Jim's 1972 death, moved to **Pacific Beach** (San Diego), nicknamed "Marie by the Sea" - Worked at **Warwick's** bookstore in **La Jolla** - Returned to **La Mesa in 1992**, member of **St. Martin's Catholic Church** - Last 3 years (2009-2012): resident of **Cloisters of the Valley** care facility - **Died 11 April 2012, age 95** - Funeral Friday **11 May 2012, 2:00 pm, St. Martin's Catholic Church, La Mesa** - Donations to **Seasons Hospice, San Diego** ## SIX CHILDREN (BY NAME, WITH SPOUSES) The obit names all six surviving children of JJM Jr + Marie in order — presumably birth order matches the 1958 resume's "ages 21, 18, 13, 10, 5, 4" → birth years ~1937, ~1940, ~1945, ~1948, ~1953, ~1954: 1. **Michelle Murphy** (no spouse listed; possibly single) 2. **Marty (Monita) Murphy** — Marty m. Monita 3. **Chris (John) Taub** — Chris [presumably daughter] m. John Taub 4. **Melda (Tom) Arick** — Melda [presumably daughter] m. Tom Arick 5. **Maureen (Sean) Renden** — Maureen m. Sean Renden 6. **Dan (Jan) Murphy** — Daniel ("Dan") m. Jan; = **the user's father** Daniel Mark Murphy per the user's confirmation 2026-05-27 (correcting an earlier reading that had Dan as grandfather; the line is JJM Jr → Dan → user) Plus: **16 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, 3 great- great-grandchildren** living as of 2012. **The user is one of Marie's 16 grandchildren** (the user is one of Dan Murphy's children) — corrected per user 2026-05-27. ## CRITICAL FAMILY-MAPPING CONSEQUENCES **1. JJM Jr death year fixed at 1972** — previously not in the archive. Adds to person_james_j_murphy_jr_la as death: 1972. **2. ALL SIX 3rd-generation Murphy children NAMED** — the 1958 Anaheim resume listed only ages, not names. This obit fills in Michelle, Marty, Chris, Melda, Maureen, Dan as the six. **3. Dan (Jan) Murphy = USER'S FATHER** (corrected 2026-05-27 per user confirmation) — the 4th-generation Daniel Mark Murphy. His wife Jan = user's mother. JJM Jr is therefore the user's paternal grandfather and Marie the user's paternal grandmother. **4. Marie's birthplace Ferdinand, Idaho** — adds a new ancestral location to the maternal-grandmother (Schueller) line. Schueller is a German-American surname; Ferdinand, ID is a German-Catholic farming community in Idaho County. The user's paternal-maternal-grandmother line is German Catholic Idaho, not Irish. ## LIVING-PERSON PII Every named 3rd-generation child + their spouses + the 16/23/3 grandchildren-and-younger are presumed living and must carry `is_living: true` so the app loader hides them from the public portal per the PII-redaction rule.

# Marie Schueller Murphy obituary *Written by her six surviving children; presumably published in a San Diego paper at funeral time, 11 May 2012* Our beautiful and beloved Mom, Marie Murphy was welcomed into the embrace of her risen Lord and all the family and friends who predeceased her, on April 11, 2012. Marie Schueller was born in Ferdinand, Idaho on August 31, 1916. Her family moved to Los Angeles when she was a young girl. Though Mom worked briefly as a beautician, her life's career, ordained by God, began when she married our Dad, Jim Murphy in 1936. Mom and Dad raised six children and made several moves up and down the West Coast before settling in La Mesa in 1959. The Murphy clan expanded during the next few decades welcoming sons and daughters in laws, and grandchildren, and still continues to grow! Though Dad was the captain of the ship, Mom was always at the helm, guiding our lives through example with the characteristics of the greatest generation ever: faith, love, selflessness and generosity of spirit. Mom transitioned into the next phase of her life as the matriarch when we lost Dad in 1972. She found her way to Pacific Beach and became known as "Marie by the Sea". She loved traveling with family and friends, working at Warwick's in La Jolla, and taking long walks on the beach collecting seashells. Family always came first, of course, but during these years we enjoyed watching Mom blossom with her new-found relationships. Mom returned to La Mesa in 1992, living her remaining independent years enjoying closer proximity to family and friends and re-joining the congregation at St. Martin's Catholic Church. During the past three years, we have been blessed with the love and care that Mom received as a resident of Cloisters of the Valley where she touched the lives of everyone with her cheerfulness, spunky personality and sense of humor. Only love can be divided endlessly and still not diminish. Mom leaves behind the love and gratitude of 6 children: Michelle Murphy, Marty (Monita) Murphy, Chris (John) Taub, Melda (Tom) Arick, Maureen (Sean) Renden, Dan (Jan) Murphy, along with 16 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren. Our most treasured heirlooms will forever be Mom's love, her unfailing laugh and humor, and her homemade "gifts from the sea." Her Funeral will be held on Friday, May 11th, 2:00 pm at St. Martin's Catholic Church in La Mesa. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your favorite charity or to Seasons Hospice, San Diego.

Open questions

  • Names of the 16 grandchildren — the obit gives only the aggregate count. Would need individual surviving-spouse + descendant obits or family records to enumerate them. Living-person PII rules apply.
  • JJM Jr exact death date 1972 — only the year is specified in this obit. A formal JJM Jr obituary (LA Times or San Diego Union 1972) would fix the date.
  • Schueller-Idaho ancestry of Marie — Ferdinand ID is a German-Catholic farming community. The Schueller / Schiller line is the user's German-American 4th-generation maternal paternal lineage. Worth a dedicated Schueller / Ferdinand-ID document ingest if the user has more.
