Likely a townscape / streetscape of Butte in the year JJM Sr was born (1883 Ardgroom) and three years before Patrick Murphy emigrated to Butte (~1886-1887). The same year Patrick Murphy filed his Declaration of Intent in Jamestown ND (4 Nov 1884 — filed the year after this photo). Book material: a period photograph from the era when JJM was an infant in Ardgroom + his father Patrick had just emigrated to the Dakota Territory. Useful for visual context in any Butte chapter that traces the city's pre-Murphy-arrival conditions.
