Head of household in the 1901 Census of Ireland for Ardgroom parish — age 60, Married, Carpenter, Co. Cork-born, with wife Mary (Kerry-born, age 50) and adult children Daniel (24, Scholar), Annie (20), and a son age 24 (Carpenter, first name unclear at current rendering). PROVISIONALLY identical to person_michael_murphy_godfather_of_jjm_1883 (the Michael Murphy named on JJM's 1883 baptismal cert). Age fits (b. ~1841 → ~42 at JJM's baptism). CAVEAT (user signal 2026-05-27): a separate source indicates that the Michael Murphy who was Patrick's older brother EMIGRATED TO SAN FRANCISCO. If accurate, the Patrick's-brother Michael is NOT this Ardgroom-1901 Michael (who was still in Ireland in 1901). Three possibilities held open: (a) Two distinct Michael Murphys — Patrick's brother (SF emigrant) is a separate man from this Ardgroom carpenter (who could be e.g. a Murphy cousin or uncle in the right parish-and-age band). (b) Patrick's brother went to SF then returned to Ireland by 1901 — rare but possible. (c) The SF source is mistaken and this Ardgroom Michael IS Patrick's brother who stayed in Ireland.
