# RAMSAY SCHOOL ACTIVITIES SET ### Graduation Exercises Will Be Conducted on Friday Evening. Graduation exercises for the eighth grade pupils of the Ramsay school will be held Friday evening in the school auditorium. The program will start at 8:30 o'clock. Six pupils, Harriett Brown, Fred Calamaro, Blaney Lundy, Rudolph Fortune, Marjorie Post, and Bert Willson, will receive diplomas at the exercises. The program for the event is as follows: Piano solo, Marjorie Post; recitation, Bert Willson; history, Rudolph Fortune; class history, Fred Calamaro; vocal solo, Miss Hazel King; "On Wings of Memory," recitation, Blaney Calamaro; class song, class; class prophecy, Blaney Calamaro; class will, Harriett Brown; commencement address, Joe Esposito; valedictory, Marjorie Post; singing of class song; and presentation of diplomas, F. W. Jones. --- ## MANY TAXPAYERS ARE KEEPING COUNTY BUSY A large number of taxpayers filed into the office of County Treasurer George Brinig yesterday to make delinquent payments on the second installment of 1936 taxes which becomes due Friday evening. After Friday, taxes which have not been paid will be marked delinquent and will be subject to penalty and interest. Brinig said over $80,000 has been paid thus far this month an average of $4,000 daily towards the total. The amount is expected to be largely increased because assessments of assessments by companies are being appealed. About $10,000 was received Tuesday at the office of Harry Holland, city treasurer, in payment for building permits. Bills were paid for the second installment of 1936 taxes at the county treasurer's office. Many taxpayers were in the office today, but crowds are expected Friday, the last day on which payments may be made to escape delinquency charges. --- ## DATES ARE DEFINITELY SET FOR BUTTE RODEO Dates for the tenth annual Butte rodeo have been definitely set for July 1, 2 and 3, it was announced by Secretary Elmo Stratton. Lineup of the rodeo, featuring some of the world's foremost champion rodeo stars have again been engaged to provide thrills and entertainment. Several specialty acts, featuring some of the most talented performers in the rodeo world. The American Legion is not connected with the rodeo this year, according to Foy Joy, who serves as chairman of the option rodeo committee. --- ## ACTOR MEREDITH VISITS IN BUTTE Burgess Meredith, stage and screen star, passed through Butte yesterday afternoon while en route to Chicago from Hollywood. He was vacationing at the ranch of a friend in Helena. He was going to Chicago to take a role in a theatrical production, after which he will return to Montana and again visit at his friend's ranch. At the conclusion of his vacation he will go to Hollywood to appear in a picture. --- ## DAVENPORTS LEAVE FOR OREGON Mr. and Mrs. Rosland Davenport and two children, Dickie and Patricia, have departed by auto for their home in McMinnville, Ore. They have been attending the First Baptist church for several weeks and expect a new pastorate in the Oregon city. --- ## Rev. Michael J. Leonard Is Honored by Clergy Associates, School Children and Others on Silver Jubilee Observance ### Beloved Catholic Priest Ordained in Chicago Back in 1915. The Rev. Michael J. Leonard, pastor of St. John the Evangelist parish and one of the most widely beloved clergymen who has graced the pulpit of a Butte church, was honored yesterday by his clergy associates, sisters and school children, on the occasion of his twenty-fifth anniversary in the Catholic priesthood. Modesty, humility, a genuine modesty and policy of self-effacement, together with an aversion to elaborate gesture, the observance was held in a minimum in deference to his wishes. The pastor refused to allow any advance publicity on the event and discouraged anything besides a minimum observance. In spite of this, his parishioners filled the church to capacity and many stood in the vestibule while the rector's daughters celebrated a solemn high mass commemorative. It was a quarter of a century ago, when he received the sacrament of the priesthood in Chicago. Friends of Bishop Sheil, the beloved auxiliary bishop of Chicago, were among those who extended to "warm all nations," "forgive offenses." The Rev. Michael J. Leonard, the Rev. Michael J. Leonard, the Savior. Bishop Rhode is now auxiliary Bishop of the Green Bay, Wis. Many priests assisted on the altar or sat in the sanctuary. Twenty-five altar boys assisted in the service, while the boys recited choir of the mass was given additional to the mass, directed by William J. Baker. **Many Children Present.** The children were attendance at the pastor of the observance. He was twenty-fifth anniversary in. All his life, since becoming a priest, he has been taking care of the welfare of children his first consideration. Since taking charge of the present parish 13 years ago, the pastor has been forever faithful to the youngsters in his heart, and, be to him, has had the full confidence, love and esteem of his parishioners. Father Leonard's career in Butte is a brief of only a few months. Only a few weeks following his ordination he was assigned as an assistant at St. Patrick's parish in Chicago. From there he was assigned to Immaculate Conception parish, a west side parish which was under the direction of the late Father George Barry. There Father Leonard labored seven years, after which he spent a year in St. Lawrence parish before being assigned to St. John's. **New School.** The intervening years have been devoted to building up the parish. The greatest work evidences of the priest's labors in this respect are tangible. In these years the school was completed and dedicated a new church. Work was done on the improvement of the church, and a new rectory constructed. The work, in particular stands at his record. Painting, a fresh appearance of beauty of the church and property around it have been beautified. The total cost of construction runs to approximately $80,000. An additional $5,000 had been spent in beautifying the church, including an altar of Italian marble of the most exquisite design. Father Leonard was born in Da-hand and came to America as a boy. He was educated in Chicago. He made college in Peria, Ill. He received his theological education in colleges in Dubuque, Iowa, and his final year of study was completed at St. Paul, Minn. His uncle, the late Father Kilkenny's neighborhood area of St. Paul's parish of Chicago at the time of the disastrous Chicago fire of 1871. The fire started in Father Kilkenny's neighborhood and wiped out church, school and parish property around it. It was a total holocaust that ended only after most of the city was in smouldering ruins. The observance yesterday was followed last night by a reception in the rectory of the pastor's closest friends. --- ## Butte in Brief **ROTARY TO PASS MEETING**— There will be no meeting of the Rotary club next Monday, as the regular meeting day falls on Memorial day. It was announced yesterday by the club secretary, R. M. Hobis. The next regular meeting of the club will be held at the Finlen hotel June 7. **HIKE PLANNED** — Members of the boys' confirmation class of the St. Mary's Lutheran church will hike to the picnic grounds on Memorial day hike today. It was announced yesterday. The hike will be conducted in the mountains beyond Columbia Gardens. Class will leave the church at 7:30 o'clock this morning. **MEETING IS SET**—Members of the Race Track fire department will hold a regular meeting on Friday night at the Silver Bow race track. **PARTY TUESDAY**— The annual dinner party of the Silver Bow A. Party. A sub-organization of the American War Mothers, American Legion, will be an event of Tuesday at the home of Mrs. Lottie Pearl Leece, Roosevelt drive. He will then continue on North Wyoming street. **VISITING PARENTS**—Leroy C. Maleck, who is attending the Montana School of Mines, visited his parents here over this past week. Mr. Maleck is employed in an office on the third floor of the federal building. **MAN FINED**—Otto Ziegler was fined $10 on a speeding charge in recorder's court yesterday. Traffic Officer Cyril Kohn testified Ziegler was speeding on Park street. **ENLISTS IN NAVY** — Howard Brennan, son of Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Brennan, of 1008 Michigan street, Brennan, has been enlisted in the U.S. Navy, and has been transferred to the San Diego Navy training station for preliminary instruction prior to first assignment. He was enlisted at Butte. **SERVICES**— The regular meeting of Butte World order will be held Tuesday, at 8 o'clock p.m., at the Y.M.C.A. The dinner meeting of the Civitan club meets Wednesday, June 2. Father Cunningham officiating. Attending the couple were Rose Boroni, sister-in-law of the bride, and Dan Laird, brother of the groom. Mrs. Laird is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Nel Boroni, 2418 Grand street, Meaderville. Her husband is the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Given, 400 Travolta. The newlyweds make their homes at 627 South Mountain street. --- ## FOREIGN COMPANIES MUST HIRE RUMANIANS TO GUARD OIL WELLS BUCHAREST, May 29.—(AP)— Guarding of Rumania's oil wells are now largely carried out by armed companies by a new decree which brought much more vigor. Under the order, British, French and other foreign companies must hire Rumanian citizens. Additional refining, shipping and production workers who are not Rumanians are to be sent to concentration camps. It was stated that approximately 79 per cent of Rumania's production capacity, some provision is made for destruction of their wells in the event of war with a German invasion. --- ## French General Sent to Prison PARIS, May 29.—(AP)—General Lionel Mittlehauser of the French corps was condemned to six months in prison by the Paris civil court (criminal patience) for abandonment of his post without notification of the Italian sector during the night of Aug. 3. "This was at the time the Germans were fighting for control of France, a drive that carried them to the Rhine." --- ## KING LEOPOLD REACHES CASTLE PARIS, May 29.—The Paris office of the Paris Evening press corps has arrived at Brussels "today" and the King's chamberlain has authorized him in command— --- ## TWO CIVIL SUITS BEGUN IN COURT ### Divorce Complaint, Action Seeking Wages Filed With Clerk. Two civil complaints and a number of probate matters were filed yesterday in the office of the clerk of the district court. Kathleen Campbell filed suit for divorce from Edwin J. Campbell, charging wilful neglect. They were married in Butte, Sept. 30, 1932, and have one child. The plaintiff asks for $50 a month. Joseph Edwards filed suit against an unnamed construction company, seeking judgment for $1,653.50 alleged to be due him from his firm for labor and services for stakes he performed for the defendant. Judge T. R. Downey signed an order for the estate of James R. White, deceased, appointing Henry Carruthers and Vera White, and Captive appointees. In the same estate, a date was set for a hearing of claim, June 3, as the time for hearing a petition to the by the administrator, for an order to sell personal property. An account was also ordered for the estate of Nora Fontenot; the hearing date is June 3. Judge Downey set Saturday, June 6, as the date for hearing the final account of the estate of Virginia Osborne. --- ## SERVICES HELD FOR CLARENCE B. PANCHOT The body of Clarence B. Panchot, 49, was returned to Walkerville today for burial. Funeral services were held this morning at Walkerville. Interment was made in the cemetery of Summit Valley lodge No. 5, Knights of Pythias. Music was presented by Evan Evans, who sang from the choir. He sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Nearer My God." Pallbearers were Chester Kennedy, Dan Dempsey, Mike Burns, Frank Kiel, Joseph Dyas and Herman Brant. Mr. Panchot, a long-time resident of the city, died suddenly at his home 1741 Stewart street. --- ## MRS. MARY KELLY, EX-WALKERVILLE RESIDENT, TAKEN Requiem high mass for Mrs. Mary Kelly, well-known ex-resident of Walkerville is taken today. The services were held at St. Lawrence church, with Rev. A. J. Harrington, who was the celebrant. Members of the American Legion contingent, of the Legion Auxiliary, stole over the grave. *Mrs. Michael Silver, Mar.* Mr. Dolan died Friday in Salt Lake City. She was brought by rail from Salt Lake City; three sisters, Mrs. Florence Curley of Butte, whose husband is district president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints; Mrs. Helen Bary of Butte and Mrs. Nellie Poulton of Helena, and two brothers, Albert William and Samuel H. Wortham. Burial was in Butte. --- **MARRIAGE LICENSES** A marriage license was being issued to Peter John Bruton, 27, by the district court to Arthur C. Cochrane, 19 and Vera Erskine, 21, both of Butte. --- **VISITS IN BUTTE** Albert P. Boyle, district manager of the census at Minneapolis, Minn., was visiting recently in Butte. He was conferring with Earl W. Clarke, local supervisor of the census. P.O. Box 149, Anderson. --- ## Kiwanians With Rotarians as Their Guests Pay Tribute to Soldier Dead of America With F. J. Bergel as orator of the day, the Butte Kiwanis club, at its noon luncheon at the New Finlen, yesterday, Memorial day by the Rotary club which will hold its meeting next week, was given a tribute by the club president. Both clubs shared in the program. The special Memorial day program was opened by Alex Blewett, club president, who greeted the guests. Bergel, during the program session, gave the Memorial day address. Music was led by Wallace Orton with W. D. Orton, accompanist. Mr. Bergel, in his address, paid adequate tribute to the veterans of the various American wars, army and navy. The latter is expected to share full honors with the other members of the observance program with a poem by Stephen P. Hogan. Among other, the speaker additionally a holiday to many of the American people, but he urged all who pause to study its significance and give thanks for the heritage it has left to all. He said, "re-dedicate the ideals of America and remember and reflect what the holiday has stood. It has come to be the most celebrated of all our holidays among all our patriotic holidays." The dedication, he would also apply, he said, to the heroes of the War of the Revolution, the War of 1812 and other conflicts down to the present. He reviewed the major conflicts in which the United States has been engaged, paying tribute to the surviving soldiers of the Grand Army of the Republic, who are bearing the frontiers of the Great Record of the last march and come to his grave in Butte. The charter of the American legion with members throughout the nation their number over 1,000,000. At the new Butte high school today the Butte Kiwanis club, at its noon luncheon at the New Finlen, dedicated a ceremony dedicated to the soldiers dead of Bower Boy of Butte. Members of the American Legion, in honoring our American soldiers dead, repeated the words of the Immortal Lincoln: "It is highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain." "In a world reeling with hatred of nations, a world in greater political and social unrest," he said, "in a world of greed, of indifference to humanity, a world reeling with the stench of fear and distrust. God remind us all, all nations, let us, as true Americans, that the spirit of Lincoln was lived by resolving to strive for a more perfect union in which we live." Whether they be in the green depths of the sea, the Flanders field, be national or local cemeteries beneath a grove of trees, these who fell, shall not be forgotten by the country for their devotion given. The poetic tribute to the G.A.R. by Mr. Hogan was read. "Down through the years; in faded blue, in gray the men who marched by two, Old here erect and eyes that shine, marching martial air, like rare refined. Their dreams of glory born anew, all time lined, their face growing through, conceals the hell that gave them birth. And as they march, a sturdy line, to amaze them the years so fine, 'And as they watch the fading few of God and vision dreams that in come true— Know that God must count over fine and keep his angel hosts in line— To guard the lads in faded blue, to be where they belong.'" --- ## ROCKER SCHOOL HOLDS GRADUATION EXERCISES Graduation exercises were conducted yesterday at the Rocker school in the afternoon. Diplomas were presented by Howard J. Bean, principal of the school. Included on the program was "Making Choices a Part of Daily Change," dialogue, primary grades; "Choosing a Way of Life," upper grades; a dialogue, "Choosing a Musical Career," by the upper grades. Maypole dance, primary pupils; humorous dialogue, "Choosing a Way;" "What Makes a School" dialogue; A dialogue entitled "I Want to Be" guest Grainberry; "Waiting for the Day" dialogue: a dialogue entitled "South of the Border;" "When You Were a Boy Like Me"; "By and By Oh" Robert Hart, Billy Kaminski and Leona Willard; "I Am an American" school song "America" and "Over There." Pupils, Miss Barbara Gammell and Miss Helen Aten were the supervisory directors. The graduates are George Trevena, Marie Reynolds, Nick Breyer and Arthur Willard. Dan Reynolds, Lawrence Danzille, Edith Breyer, Vernon Stiles, Betty Gooseberry, Allen Rowe, George Kogh, Carl Olson, Hale Sherrill, Arthur Williams, Hazel Danville, Mary Leli, Elinor Sherrill, Jeanette Smedley, Millet and Arthur Rowe. --- ## COUNTY SELLS 11 PARCELS OF LAND Before the county took title, taxes at $1,200— to which the county had outstanding taxes owing, certificates of owners to pay taxes—were sold at the county courthouse yesterday by chairman of the board of county commissioners, John F. Butler. The parcels totaling $13,000 were offered up. Before the county took title, taxes in some cases for more than 10 years, and in some cases, interest during the past year, was conducted at the courthouse by the clerk of court. The properties were located mainly on the outskirts of Butte, mostly in Albertson Park, Wilton additions and the original townsite of the city of Butte. --- ## FOREST SERVICE CHANGE IS MADE ### Alfred A. Flint Takes Over District Ranger Post in Butte Area. Alfred A. Flint, a former resident of Phillipsburg and employee of the U. S. Forest service for several years, arrived in Butte this week to take duties as ranger in charge of the Butte district of the Deer Lodge national forest, Supervisor Charles A. Joy announced yesterday. Flint will succeed D. O. Marquette, who has been the ranger for the past two and a half years, who has been transferred out of the Butte national forest as district ranger at Wisdom. Flint will take office officially on June 1. Marquette, who will go to Wisdom to replace District Ranger Marshall who has been retiring, entered the Forest Service in February, 1936, as district ranger of the Anaconda. Then was the Jefferson national forest. The Anaconda district has included the Lewis and Clark forest. In 1936 it was transferred to the Challis national forest in eastern Montana. In 1936 he again transferred to the Lewis and Clark, where he came to Butte in November, 1936. Flint, the new ranger, who studied management, having had valuable experience in the "back part of the state," Mt. Joy said. "He has shown excellence in grazing, range management here and it will fitting in administration of the extensive Big Hole territory." Flint came here last 16 from the Coeur d'Alene national forest in Idaho, where he served as district ranger. A graduate of the Montana State University in the forestry work, served with the Forest Service in the state on the Gallatin, being chief of party on trail traversal of a new country. In 1932 he was with the protection organization in the Deer Lodge national forest. In 1934 he became assistant district ranger for the institution for the Northside, Idaho, and later took up his permanent statell. He became a district ranger in 1936, was transferred south in 1937, serving there until his transfer to Butte. --- ## DR. PETERSON TO ATTEND CONCLAVE Dr. R. P. Peterson of the Murray hospital will go to Helena on June 4 at noon to attend a one-man a council meeting of physicians and experts to return to Butte June 16. Dr. Peterson is a regular member of the American Society of General Practice, returning on June 6 and which is followed by the annual convention of the American Medical association. The latter convention opens on June 7. Dr. Peterson is a member of a committee which will be making special studies of issues and which is expected to conduct a one-day seminar also. Papers will be given by leaders of the American medical profession joining the world's foremost heart specialists and will conduct a one-day seminar also. --- ## ELIZABETH ARDEN REPRESENTATIVE COMING TO BUTTE Elizabeth Arden, international cosmetic authority will send her representative, Madame Maden-Fischer, who is expected to arrive at Hennessy's. She will be here for several days and give demonstrations to Butte women of Miss Arden's beauty requirements. She will be at Hennessy's at 2 o'clock on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons for personal consultations. --- **DR. PETERSON TO ATTEND CONCLAVE** *(continued above)* HELENA, May 29.—(AP)—Frank L. Riley, widely-known and pioneer Butte resident, is a former Silverbow county official who was actively with a number of fraternal organizations and civic movement in Butte with the rural movement there for many years. CARROLL Death yesterday came to Mrs. Mary C. Carroll, 77, 3 East Quartz street. It was learned that she was brought to Butte from Broadway who was at the bedside. A nephew Edward P. McGivern, 1318 North Montana street, is presently left for Salt Lake City several days ago according to reports, the serious illness of Mrs. Carroll who is her reporting relative to funeral services. --- ## LEO C. WORTHEN Edmund Morrison, recently from a building in Salt Lake City proved legal authority for the estate of the 91-year-old contractor accounting to his attorney. Mr. Worthen's skull was fractured in an automobile accident. He has received here. No word was received concerning the present state of the man. Surviving relatives include his wife; four sisters, Mrs. Lois Thompson in Salt Lake City; three sisters, Mrs. Florence Curley of Butte, whose husband is district president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints; Mrs. Helen Bary of Butte and Mrs. Nellie Poulton of Helena, and two brothers, Albert William and Samuel H. Wortham. Burial was in Butte. --- **SECRET SLIPS OUT** HOLLYWOOD, May 28.— [illegible] Florence Leonard was in Hollywood today. She was married for one day before her second husband started finding out about it. Just before she filed suit, she was married under the name of Priscilla Magnusson, filed a petition in Brenville. A Leonard's court at San Bernardino, California, to annul the marriage. Ora W. Haglund, assistant director clerk, filed for Magnusson's certificate of divorce by default.
