Phone 4311 *Miner Want Ads for Results* --- ## Column 2 # UNIQUE CONCERT GIVEN IN BUTTE ## Members of New Croatian Orchestra Among Butte Amateurs Give Pleasing Entertainment. Last night's meeting of the Harrison Parent-Teachers' circle probably made more new friends for the Croatian character in Butte, more than 100 adults attending, in addition to a large number of people, who had a special seat in boxes separate from the audience. In addition to the usual entertainment numbers, Mrs. Harrison [illegible] an excel-lent extended program was the music furnished by the new Butte Croatian tamburica orchestra, "Zuminka" an amateur organization recently formed among the Croatian residents of the Harrison district. The tamburica, the national stringed instrument of the Croatian people, resembling both the guitar and the mandolin, having four strings, and varying in size from a diminutive affair resembling the mandolin or the mandolin to a bass larger than the largest guitar. The members of the orchestra rendered more than a dozen numbers, which was enthusiastically applauded by the cosmopolitan audience of more than 100 adults in attendance. The members of the orchestra are John Babich, leader; Victor Lasak, Tony Krivanec, Matt Bertakich, Frank Urbanach, Tony Jovich, Joe Babich, Paul Babich, Joe Mitchelich, Nick Popovich, Frank Zuboich. The students' part of the program was carried out ably by the children of the Harrison school, led by Doris Cornelishen; a song by the fifth grade, "Pussy Willow" recitation, Manny Cornelishen; song, Nellie McMenamin; Paul Rogan, song, Martha Weaver, song; the work reflecting credit on the character of the musical instruction of the school. After the more or less formal program, there were impromptu addresses by parents, members of the orchestra and others, in which the ladies of the organization were refreshingly frank. Reference of so many parents at a meeting of this kind gave evidence of a spirit that was particularly gratifying to the meeting as a whole. --- ## WESTERN PIONEER IS IN HIS FINAL REST ### Death Comes for William Harkins, Until Recently of Walla Walla, Wash. William Harkinson, a pioneer of the west and one who rode stage and horses across the trackless plains and through the mountain passes of the west, died at St. James hospital here a week ago from Walla Walla, Washington, where he had retired after a well-known singer. The funeral will be held Sunday afternoon at the Duggan undertaking parlors Monday. Besides his son Ray, he also leaves two sons, William and John, and two daughters, Mary and Margaret. --- ## TAXI AND MOTORCYCLE JUST MISS A TRAGEDY A narrow escape from death was reported last evening, when a child escaped serious injury following a collision, and a motor cycle driven by Ray Glenn, and a taxicab came within haultable. A woman holding two babies was in the sidecar of the motor cycle. Glenn, it is understood, was coming up Main street in a motorcycle direction when the taxi-cab driver endeavored to pass a street car found undesired. It was started up beside the car and was swinging around in front of it, in an effort to reach the curb ahead, when the collision with the motor cycle occurred. The woman holding the two babies fell but escaped serious injury, it was said. ### MEETS PAINFUL ACCIDENT. Mrs. Nicholas Sadore, wife of Chris Sadore, who conducts a restaurant at 8 South Main street, while bringing articles from the store to her apartment in company with her husband, she was reporting upon from the street and fell over a ladder, breaking her arm in a painful fall. Mr. and Mrs. Sadore are well known in Butte. Courtney, Well Known in Mining City, Passes Away After Illness of Six Weeks. D. C. Courtney, who since 1880, with the exception of five years when he was in business in Portland, Ore., had been a resident of this city, died at an early hour yesterday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. W. J. McMenamin, 216 South Beatty street, after an illness of six weeks. Death came peaceably in the early morning. Mr. Courtney was 64 years of age and was born in Forestville, Pa. In 1866 he began his marriage in Williamstown, Pa. In Minn E;lias Staples, the family moved to Butte and eventually with his brother Thomas to Anaconda, Mr. D. C. Courtney entered the grocery business at the corner of Main and Park streets, which was known as the "White Pantry," later the business was moved to West Park street. About five years ago Mr. Courtney, with his family moved to Portland, Ore., and there he resided for some years because of his family's health. It was only shortly after his recent arrival in Butte that Mr. Courtney's health began to be affected. ### WAS KNOWN AS GENEROUS MAN. Mr. Courtney was one of the best-known men in Butte, and was the center of a large circle of friends here. He was a man of a particularly genial and generous disposition, while in all ways a modest, quiet character. He is survived by many relatives, including his widow, besides his daughter Mrs. W. J. McMenamin, of this city; and Mrs. W. J. McMahon and Mrs. E. J. Conway; and his brother, Dennis Courtney, of Pittsburgh, Pa.; two sisters, Mrs. John Daly and Mrs. E. J. Whitty; wife of the police Judge of Butte; and nephew John Courtney and friends Bernard Nova, Mrs. H. L. Shanteau and Mrs. Victor Courtney of this city; Mrs. La Chapelle of Los Angeles and Mrs. J. L. Courtney of this city, and friends of Missoula. Mr. Courtney was a member of several fraternal orders. --- ## MANY ATTEND FUNERAL OF LATE THOS. KEALEY ### Prominent Member of A. O. H. Is Laid at Rest With Impressive Ceremonies. The funeral of Thomas Kealey, for years a well-known resident of the A. O. H., and a well-known and highly esteemed citizen of Butte, was held yesterday afternoon at St. Patrick's church by many sorrowing relatives and friends. Rarely has a funeral at this church in recent years attracted greater tribute of the interest than such as interest. Requiem high mass was celebrated by Rev. Father George Col[illegible], while appropriate music was rendered by the choir. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Father George [illegible]. The pallbearers were James Cunnion, Michael Kearney, John Daly, Daniel Conlan, Michael Connors, John O'Brien, John J. Crowley, president of Division No. 1, A. O. H. of Butte, and also recently Martin Joyce and Patrick Gagnon. --- ## WELL-KNOWN MINER IS DEAD AT HIS HOME HERE Phillip Lynch, a well-known miner, and well-known citizen of Butte, died yesterday at the age of 42 years. The announcement of his death is received by many relatives in Butte. Besides his wife, he is survived by his mother, Mrs. Rose Mullins. In this city, Miss Maria Peron, there are two brothers, James and Edward Lynch, and one sister, Mrs. Rose Mullins. In this city, his two sons. His family has been of New York and his parents in Ireland. Arrangements for the funeral have not been completed. --- ## NO. 13 BRINGS JOY ### Bakers Dozen of Sturdy Children Now at Residence of Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Harrington. No one can convince J. J. Harrington of West Galena, that 13 is so unlucky a number, because the 13th child in his family arrived at the Harrington home making a perfect bakers' dozen of the youngsters. The youngest may be named Thomas, on election suggestion. There is opposition to this, as many wish his name should be along the democratic ticket and he is more inclined to be of a more independent spirit. A brother-in-law of Mr. Harrington's, Clerk of the Court J. A. Sullivan, remarks that several of the Harrington family have been living presidents and that if the fortunes of the 13th born child should be named either Teddy or Woodrow, as occasion would have it. Every one who knew the Harrington home is gladdened by the story of his 13 children, and many friends of the family in Butte are exited. Are you going to build? See last page Monday Miner --- ## Column 4 # WANTED $47,515 BUT $2,000 ## Attorney Asks Leave to Compromise for Much Less Than the Verdict. Attorney A. B. Molner has petitioned in the district court for permission to compromise the case of A. B. Molner as guardian of his minor in the action against the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul railway for $2,000. Page was killed by a Milwaukee train on Nov. 18, 1913. Attorney Molner was retained as administrator and he brought suit for $47,515 as damages. The jury awarded him a verdict of $28,000 but this was deemed worthy of reduction. Attorney Molner thinks it is better to compromise than to have the case tried again. Attorney Molner has petitioned the court for permission to do so, stating that this is probably the highest amount which he might be able to recover. --- ## Butte in Brief Mrs. J. W. Ginn, president of the Woman's club of Butte, announced last evening that an exhibit of home-made products will be given at the Woman's club April 3 to 8, inclusive. Luncheons of Montana-raised foods will be served at the club daily during this period. --- The court is holding Francis Leon, son who is waited by the authorities as a witness and on a charge of refusing to appear as a witness in a criminal proceeding, who was located in Butte on advices of Philippe Montana. --- All of the big and little things in the way of printing, writing materials, paper, pound paper, tablets, envelopes, pencils, pins, clips, pens, links, ink, inkage, sealing wax and sundries at the J. Help us --- ## Column 5 ## TODAY'S MOST UNIQUE LOCAL STORY ### DEFENDANT'S ATTORNEY ACTS AS COMPLAINANT ### H. W. Howell in Hurry to Get to Helena Pays $10 Fine for Exceeding Speed Limit. With his attorney, Jack Ward, acting in the role of complaining witness, H. W. Howell, a well-known, automobile agent of Butte, was fined $10 on a charge of exceeding the speed limit in his gasoline buggy by Justice of the Peace John Jensen, who tried the case in the absence of Police Judge Whitby in the police court yesterday. Howell had important business which took him to Helena on important business. He therefore had instructed attorney Ward that plea of guilty or him, and as the defendant wanted to proceed to Helena, he was set in court. Attorney Ward signed the complaint against his own client, Howell, who was sentenced to pay. Thirty Days. --- Bertha Bates was yesterday given a sentence of 30 days in the city jail on a charge of conducting a disorderly house. Justice Doyen will preside in police court today. One case of interest pertains to the death of D. C. Courtney, a relative of the Courtney family. --- ## HE CROSSES IN FRONT OF CAR AND IS HURT Frank White, 431 Ohio street, tried to cross in front of a street car on East Park street early last evening and was injured. He was taken to the hospital after suffering contusions and cuts about the forehead. When he had not regained consciousness when taken to the hospital, he was bruised. As far as could be learned by witnesses when the accident took place, Mr. Bunbury, White, who is about 24 years of age, had left his "billy" be-hind him and had his discussions as to filing with the officer how he started to be ganged by anybody and to pay up the bills. Tally Johns, who has been in jail as a result of being ordered by the court's order in paying his wife alimony, was released yesterday because of a stipulation which was filed. He confessed but not altogether pleaded guilty to the charge and pattern—and a "billy." He was arrested on a car from the Moon-light saloon on East Broadway, amid at the local billiard parlors. When arrested he had in possession a "billy" revolver and "bludgeon" and created some excitement about the billiard business. He fled, but ran into the arms of the officer who was waiting to jail. He had left his "billy" behind but still had his discussions as to filing with the officer how he started to be ganged by anybody and to pay up the bills. --- ## IS GOING TO FIGHT AGAINST EXTRADITION Miss Emma Ashton is going to battle against extradition on a charge of stealing a trunk valued at something more or less than $20, which was addressed from Pocatello, from a traveling companion, while serving as a seamstress endeavoring to secure an order for a sewing machine—to Butte. The young woman's wearing apparel, and in a general way the contents of the trunk included all of her clothing, as well as her traveling bag. She was arrested as having divulged her telegraphic information and denies that she paid any attention to the request. Are you going to build?
